What to expect

Terme Reali di Valdieri is a small spa village at the end of the road up the Valle Gesso, in the province of Cuneo, at about 1,370 m (4,500 ft). It sits inside the Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime, with forested slopes, a rushing torrent and high peaks all around. Hot water comes out of the rock of Monte Matto, and people have been bathing here for centuries.

The complex has four parts: the thermal park with its outdoor pool, the thermal establishment for medical cures, a SPA for massages and beauty treatments, and the Hotel Royal. It opens only for the summer, roughly June to September, and is shut the rest of the year.

The thermal park is what most day visitors come for. The outdoor sulphur pool has jets and small cascades and looks out at the Maritime Alps. Around it is a sun terrace with loungers. There is also a calidarium (a natural steam room) and a vascular water path with foot baths, where you walk through alternating water. The air smells of sulphur, which is normal here.

The water

The operator describes the water as hyperthermal, sulphate and bicarbonate, sodic and strongly alkaline, with a pH of about 9.2. The main springs come out at about 140°F60°C, and the site quotes the Italian Geological Society for a deep reservoir temperature of about 266°F130°C. The water is cooled before it reaches the bathing pool, which the operator keeps at about 93°F34°C: warm and comfortable, not hot.

The spa is also known for its thermal algae, which grow on sloped stairways fed by the spring water and are used in mud-style treatments. These are part of the paid cures and SPA menu, not the pool ticket.

Prices and booking

These are the operator’s published prices, checked in October 2026 for the 2026 season.

Thermal park (outdoor sulphur pool at 93°F34°C, calidarium, solarium and vascular water path):

  • Full day, 9:00 to 18:00: €35 on weekdays, €40 on holidays. The pool closes from 13:00 to 14:00 for cleaning.
  • Morning half day, 9:00 to 13:00: €20 on weekdays, €25 on holidays and the day before.
  • Afternoon half day, 14:00 to 18:00: same prices as the morning.
  • Evening session, Thursday to Saturday, 20:00 to 23:00, by booking: €20.
  • Children up to 3 free; ages 4 to 11 half price. Discounted passes for 6 or 12 entries.

Rules: booking is compulsory for every service, online or by phone on +39 0171 97341. A swim cap is compulsory in the pool. You have to leave the pool 15 minutes before the park closes. People on a course of thermal cures get 10% off park entry.

Medical cures: the spa is rated first level by the Ministry of Health and works with the national health service (SSN). With a GP’s prescription that names the cure and an approved condition, Italian residents can have one SSN cure cycle a year and pay a €55 ticket unless exempt. Private prices run from €15 for an inhalation to €50 for algae plus a bath.

Getting there

From Cuneo, drive south-west to Borgo San Dalmazzo, then up the Valle Gesso to the village of Valdieri and on past Sant’Anna di Valdieri to the end of the road. It is a little over 30 km (19 miles) from Cuneo and about 45 minutes. The last 15 km (9 miles) from Valdieri village climbs steadily on a mountain road; Sant’Anna is about 7 km (4 miles) below the spa. The Hotel Royal has a large free private car park for guests.

The road is closed in winter because of avalanche risk, which is one reason the season is so short.

Without a car, the operator points to Autolinea Nuova Benese line 82 from Cuneo (phone 0171 692929, benese.it). The Maritime Alps park also runs an on-demand shuttle in summer for walkers.

When to go

The season runs from June to September only. July and August are the warmest and busiest months, and the Hotel Royal charges high-season rates from July 17 to August 23. June and September are quieter and the mountain air is cool, which makes a 93°F34°C pool feel good. At this altitude, evenings can be chilly even in midsummer, so bring a warm layer for the terrace.

Where to stay nearby

  • Hotel Royal, on site, is a late 19th-century building that was once a residence of the Savoy court. It has its own reserved thermal pool and sun terrace and an internal heated passage to the spa. 2026 rates for bed and breakfast in a double room: €170 in low season (June to July 16 and August 24 to September) and €190 in high season; half board from €125 per person. Tourist tax is €1 per person per day from age 12. Pets are allowed in non-common areas for €10 a day.
  • The chalets, Bela Rosin and Casino di Caccia, are two restored Swiss-style buildings from 1857 that sleep 10 and rent by the week (from €1,900 to €2,500).
  • Sant’Anna di Valdieri and Valdieri village lower down the valley have more places to stay and eat.

Safety notes

  • Soak time: the owners advise keeping baths to about 20 minutes and then cooling off in the fresh air.
  • Altitude and weather: this is high mountain country. Afternoon storms are common in summer; leave the pool if there is lightning.
  • Roads: the valley road is narrow and winding near the top. Drive slowly and watch for cyclists.
  • Hiking: if you add a walk, carry water and a jacket. Conditions change fast above 1,500 m.

Nearby stops worth adding

A path from the spa leads up to the Rifugio Valasco in a little over an hour with little climbing, on the Piano del Valasco, where the Savoy kings built a hunting lodge in the 1800s. The wider Maritime Alps park has many longer routes. For another Cuneo-province spa, Terme di Lurisia near Mondovì is open for more of the year.
