Loutra Kyllinis (Kyllini Thermal Springs)
Near Kastro, Ilia, Greece
A historic sulphur spa on the north-west coast of the Peloponnese, by Roman bath ruins and today's Grecotel resorts. The cool 78.8°F26°C springs and old hydrotherapy centre are not in public use.
Closed to the public. We found no evidence that the old hydrotherapy centre is open to the public. A 2020 parliamentary question called it a former facility and asked for it to be brought back into use; no reopening has been announced. The land belongs to the state asset fund (HRADF) and is leased to a Grecotel-group company until 2050.

What to expect
Loutra Kyllinis (“the baths of Kyllini”) is a small settlement on the north-west tip of the Peloponnese, in Ilia, looking across to Zakynthos and Kefalonia. It sits in woods, including old eucalyptus plantings, about 4 km (2.5 miles) south-west of the village of Kastro and the Frankish castle of Chlemoutsi, about 6 km (3.7 miles) from the ferry port of Kyllini and about 85 km (53 miles) from Patras.
For more than a century this was one of Greece’s best known spas. Today a casual visitor cannot bathe in its springs. The old state hydrotherapy centre is not in public use, the Roman baths are a fenced archaeological site, and the land around them is a resort zone leased to the Grecotel group. Come for the beach, the castle and the ruins, not for a soak.
The water
The springs are hydrogen sulphide, chloride and sodium water at about 78.8°F26°C. That is cool for a “thermal” spring. The spa used them for baths, mud packs, inhalation, drinking and steam treatments rather than hot pools, and marketed them mainly for skin, joint and respiratory complaints. You will not find a hot pool here even when facilities work.
History
People bathed here in Roman times, and the ruins of a large Roman bath complex survive next to the springs. In 1880 the rights to the springs went to SPAP, the Peloponnese railway company, which built up the spa and ran a branch line from Vartholomio to Loutra Kyllinis. The eucalyptus trees around the springs were planted in 1890-1892 with seedlings brought from France. The line is now abandoned.
The Greek National Tourism Organisation (EOT) took over in 1951. In 1998, after an international tender, the site was leased for tourism development: about 1,900 stremmata (about 190 hectares) with its buildings, facilities and spring, to a company then called Loutra Kyllinis SA (later FAIAX SAETA), part of the Grecotel group. In 1999 the area around the Roman baths was declared an archaeological site.
Status, ownership and the HRADF question
In 2013 the property passed to the state asset fund, TAIPED, now known as HRADF, under decision 244/2013, and it is listed in Annex C of Law 4389/2016. ETAD, the state real estate company, manages it. The forest land and the ownership of the mineral spring were expressly kept out of the transfer. The lease to the Grecotel-group company runs until June 25, 2050, so any sale of the land would come with that lease attached.
In September 2020 an MP asked the culture and tourism ministers to promote the Roman ruins and to make the “former” hydrotherapy centre usable again. The culture ministry replied that it would work with the company on a conservation study tied to the environmental approval for the Olympia Riviera resort. ETAD’s reply mentioned abandoned buildings from earlier periods near the Roman bath. We found no later announcement of works or reopening. Some guides still list treatments and a phone number (+30 26230 96264); treat them as out of date unless someone answers.
Getting there
- From Patras: Drive south-west toward Pyrgos and turn off for Kyllini, then follow signs for Kastro and Loutra Kyllinis. It is about 85 km (53 miles).
- From Kyllini port: The port faces Zakynthos and Kefalonia across the strait. Loutra Kyllinis is about 6 km (3.7 miles) away by road.
The roads into the settlement lead to the Grecotel resort entrances and to the beach. Respect fences and resort property.
When to go
Because there is no public bathing, timing is about the coast. The beaches are best from June to September. The Grecotel La Riviera resort says it will reopen for the 2027 summer season, so expect a quiet strip out of season and through 2026. Spring and autumn are good for the castle and walks in the woods.
Rules and etiquette
- Roman baths: The ruins are a protected archaeological site. Do not climb fences or enter the excavation area.
- Resort land: The spa buildings sit inside leased resort land. Ask before walking into any facility.
- The springs: There is no public access to the spring outlets, and they are not managed for bathing. Do not try to soak in them.
Where to stay nearby
- Grecotel resorts at Riviera Olympia (La Riviera, LUX ME Oasis, Mandola Rosa and Ilia Palms) take up much of the coast at Loutra Kyllinis. They have their own spa, but it is not a thermal spring bath.
- Kastro, 4 km (2.5 miles) away under Chlemoutsi, has rooms and tavernas.
- Kyllini port, about 6 km (3.7 miles) away, has hotels and is handy for the Zakynthos ferry.
Safety notes
- Abandoned buildings: Old spa buildings near the ruins have been described as abandoned. Do not go inside; floors and roofs may not be safe.
- Sulphur water: If you find water flowing from the springs, do not drink it or use it on broken skin. It is untested and unmanaged.
- Summer sun: The beaches here are exposed. Bring shade and water in July and August.
Nearby stops worth adding
Chlemoutsi castle above Kastro is the main sight, a Frankish fortress looking out over the Ionian. The long sandy beaches of the Kyllini coast run north and south of the resorts. If you want a working thermal bath in Ilia, look south along the Ilia coast to the Kaiafas baths, and check their status before you go.

Loutra Kyllinis (Kyllini Thermal Springs): common questions
Are the Loutra Kyllinis thermal baths open?
We could not confirm that they are. The old hydrotherapy centre was described in a 2020 parliamentary question as a former facility, and the MP asked for it to be made usable again. ETAD's reply the same year mentioned abandoned older buildings near the Roman baths. No reopening has been announced since. An older listing gives the phone number +30 26230 96264 if you want to ask.
Who owns Loutra Kyllinis?
The property passed to the state asset fund (TAIPED, now HRADF) in 2013 and is managed by ETAD. Since 1998 it has been leased for tourism development to a company formerly called Loutra Kyllinis SA, part of the Grecotel group, under a lease that runs to June 25, 2050. The spring itself and the forest land stay state property.
Is the water hot?
No. The springs are sulphurous, chloride and sodium water at about 78.8°F26°C, so they were used for cool baths, mud and inhalation rather than hot soaking.
Can I see the Roman baths?
The ruins of a large Roman bath complex sit inside the leased area and were declared an archaeological site in 1999. The Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia has said it plans a study with the company to conserve and display them, but no opening date has been given.
Where is Loutra Kyllinis?
