What to expect
Loutraki is a spa town on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Corinth, just across the Isthmus from the Peloponnese. The name comes from the Greek word for bath, and in antiquity the place was called Thermae, for its warm springs. Today most Greeks know it for two things: the bottled water sold all over the country, and the thermal spa in the middle of town.
Loutraki Thermal Spa on Georgiou Lekka street is that spa. It joins the restored 1934 hydrotherapy building, a classical-looking structure rebuilt after the 1928 earthquake, to a larger modern wing. It is run by Touristiki Loutrakiou S.A., the municipal tourism company. This is a spa in the European sense: indoor pools with jets, timed sessions, a sauna and a hamam, and a long menu of massages and beauty treatments. It is not a natural pool or a free soak.
The facilities, as the spa and the town tourism office list them:
- Two heated indoor pools with waterfalls and underwater jet massage.
- One cool indoor pool, which the spa says is used for post-traumatic problems.
- One heated outdoor pool with a mushroom-style fountain, a waterfall and a pool bar.
- Private hydrotherapy tubs, four single and three double cabins.
- A sauna and a steam bath (hamam), rain showers and massage rooms.
The water
Loutraki’s water is lower in temperature than many Greek springs. The European Historic Thermal Towns Association gives the hottest spring as 88°F31°C and describes the water as magnesium-rich. The spa does not publish pool temperatures, but it calls its main pools heated. The water was first analysed in 1847, and in the restored building you can still drink it at the buvette, where it runs from the rock.
The spa markets the water for rheumatic and joint complaints and recommends drinking it for kidney and digestive problems. Take those claims as marketing, and ask a doctor if you have a heart condition or are pregnant.
Getting there
The spa is at Georgiou Lekka 24, in the centre of Loutraki, a few minutes’ walk from the seafront.
- By car from Athens: Loutraki is about 80 km (50 miles) west of Athens. Take the Athens-Corinth motorway west and leave it at the Isthmus, then follow signs north for Loutraki. The spa says it is about 5 km (3 miles) from the Corinth Canal.
- From Corinth: Loutraki is about 8 km (5 miles) northeast of the city.
- By train: The Athens suburban railway runs to Corinth. The spa puts the station about 15 minutes from Loutraki; finish the trip by taxi.
Parking in central Loutraki is on the street, and it can be tight on summer weekends.
When to go
The spa opens every day of the year, including weekends and public holidays, so the question is more about crowds and weather than about season.
- October to May is the best time. The town is quieter, a warm pool feels right, and you can follow it with a walk along the seafront.
- Summer brings Athenians to the beach, and the town fills up on weekends. The single and Caracalla hydromassage tubs are only listed from June 1 to October 31, so come in summer or early autumn if you want a private tub.
- Weekdays are calmer than weekends at any time of year.

Where to stay nearby
Loutraki is a resort town with plenty of hotels along the seafront and the streets behind the spa, from simple family hotels to large beach hotels. Staying in town means you can walk to the spa and the beach. Corinth, 8 km (5 miles) away, is a cheaper base with more everyday services, and Athens is close enough for a day trip by car.
Safety notes
- Sessions are timed. Twenty minutes in a jet pool is enough for most people; drink water afterwards.
- Health: Check with a doctor before using hot tubs, saunas or steam baths if you have heart disease, high or low blood pressure, or are pregnant.
- Wet floors: Walk carefully between the pools, sauna and showers.
Nearby stops worth adding
The Corinth Canal is a short drive south, with a viewing bridge over the cut. Up the Perachora peninsula, Lake Vouliagmeni and the remains of the Heraion of Perachora, the ancient temple site of Hera on the cape, make a half-day trip. If you are heading on to the Saronic Gulf, the small free seaside pool of the Pausanias Baths on Methana is a different kind of soak, warm water by the sea with no ticket.
