- The water is carbonated, so it fizzes slightly against your skin.

- Methana's old spa buildings in the main town have been abandoned for years, so this is the easiest soak on the peninsula.
What to expect
Methana is a volcanic peninsula hanging off the Peloponnese into the Saronic Gulf, joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus and often mistaken for an island. It has been a spa since antiquity. The travel writer Pausanias, along with Strabo and Ovid, wrote about it, and according to Pausanias the hot springs appeared after a volcanic eruption in the reign of Antigonus Gonatas. The six known mineral springs are sulphurous or sodium-chloride waters, products of the volcano.
The Pausanias Baths (Loutro tou Pafsania, also written Pausanias Bath) are not in the spa town itself. They sit at Agios Nikolaos, a small seaside settlement on the north side of the peninsula named after its church. What you find is modest: a little stone-edged pool right at the water’s edge, a few steps down from the road, recently renovated and kept tidy. A 2023 report called it a “Lilliputian” pool, and it is. A few people at a time is the limit.
The clever part is the pump. Beside the pool stands a small stone-built hut, and inside it a green button. Press it and an electric pump starts drawing warm, carbonated spring water into the basin. The bubbles are part of the charm: the water fizzes faintly on your skin.
The water
Sources differ on the temperature. travel.gr, writing in August 2026, puts it at 86-91°F30-33°C depending on the spring. A 2023 piece gave up to 102°F39°C. Expect a warm bath, not a hot one. The water is carbonated, and local guides say it has long been used for skin and gynaecological complaints and for rheumatism; treat that as tradition, not medical advice.
What about the Methana spa town?
Methana town, called Loutropoli Methanon (“spa town of Methana”), grew up around the springs after 1870, and its first hydrotherapy buildings went up in the early 20th century. Do not plan around them. A travel.gr feature from late August 2026 describes the large pool and the striking old bath building on the road into town, with its sulphur pond in front, as abandoned for years. You can look at them from outside, but the Pausanias Baths are the working soak on the peninsula.
Getting there
Methana is in the municipality of Troizinia-Methana, part of the Islands regional unit of Attica, about 22 km (14 miles) northwest of Galatas.
- By car from Athens: It is about 160 km (99 miles) and roughly 2.5 hours by road. Cross the Isthmus of Corinth and follow the coast road southeast toward Epidaurus, then the road onto the peninsula.
- By ferry: Saronic Gulf ferries from Piraeus call at Methana. Check current timetables, which change by season.
- To the baths: From Methana town, drive north around the peninsula toward Agios Georgios and on to Agios Nikolaos, about 11 km (6.8 miles). The pool is just below the road at the edge of the sea.
Park on the roadside where it is safe and walk down the steps. There is no car park, no changing room and no toilet.
When to go
The baths are open access all year. There are no hours, but go in daylight.
- September and October are ideal. The sea is still warm for a swim after the soak, and the island-like peninsula is quiet.
- Summer brings more visitors, and with a pool this small you may have to wait your turn.
- Winter is when a warm soak feels best, but rough seas can splash over the basin on stormy days.
Rules and etiquette
There are no posted rules beyond common sense, and no one in charge. Help keep it that way.
- Swimwear. This is a public spot by a road, used by locals and families.
- Share. The pool holds only a few people. If others are waiting, soak for a while and then give up your place.
- No soap or shampoo in the pool.
- Use the pump sensibly. Run it to refresh the water, then leave it for the next person.
- Take your rubbish home. There are no bins.
Where to stay nearby
There is no lodging at the baths, but the peninsula has plenty of small places to stay:
- Agios Nikolaos itself, right next to the baths.
- Methana town, 11 km (6.8 miles) away, with the port, tavernas and rooms.
- Agios Georgios, to the north, and the small harbour of Vathy.
- Palaiokastro and the inland villages if you want somewhere quieter.
Safety notes
- Slippery rocks: The stones around a seaside pool are wet and often slick. Wear sandals on the steps.
- Sea conditions: In strong wind, waves can wash into the basin. Do not bathe there in rough weather.
- Water quality: The pool is untreated spring water. Keep your head above the surface and do not drink it.
- Children: The pool is shallow and small, but it sits right by the sea. Keep young children within reach.
Nearby stops worth adding
Methana’s volcano is the other reason to come. From the village of Kaimeni Chora, a short, steep path climbs through black lava to the crater area, with views over the Argosaronic Gulf. On the narrow isthmus, the ruined Fabier Castle of 1826 stands about 80 m above the sea. Heading back toward Athens, you can break the drive with a session at Loutraki Thermal Spa on the Gulf of Corinth, a full modern spa with pools, sauna and hamam.
