What to expect

Loutra Smokovou is a small spa village built around a single square in a green ravine of oak and broad-leaved plane trees, at about 450 m on the edge of the Agrafa mountains. It is about 35 km (22 miles) south-west of Karditsa, on the road to Rentina, and 6 km (3.7 miles) from the village of Smokovo, officially renamed Loutropigi in 1926.

This is a traditional Greek spa town rather than a place for an outdoor soak. You come for a bath in the hydrotherapy centre, a spell in the spa, a walk and a meal on the square. Most visitors are day-trippers from Thessaly. A 2019 visitor survey by a University of Thessaly researcher found about three in four came for the day, and most were between 35 and 60.

The water

Five springs rise at a natural 98.6-104.4°F37-40.2°C. The water is collected in a tank and piped through insulated pipes to the hydrotherapy centre. It is classed as sulphurous and alkaline, hypotonic and low in minerals, with a light smell of hydrogen sulphide. Smokovo is one of Greece’s officially recognised thermal natural resources (Government Gazette 6195/B/31.12.2018).

The operator markets the water for respiratory, rheumatic, joint and skin complaints and for neuralgia and gynaecological problems. A doctor is based at the baths during the season, and the thesis notes that baths are advised against for people with serious heart problems.

The facilities

The hydrotherapy centre has large private bathtubs that turn into a hydromassage tub at the push of a button, a thermal pool, inhalation rooms, a nasal irrigation room and a drinking fountain. A spa wing opened in June 2009 with a pool, a gym, two classic and two infrared saunas, two hammams and two massage rooms.

Two of the springs are still known as Ali and Mahmut, after Ali Pasha of Ioannina and Mahmut Pasha, who visited about a century after the first bath huts went up. Local history dates the first bath huts to 1662, built by two monks from the monastery at Rentina.

Getting there

  • From Karditsa: Take the Karditsa-Rentina road south-west for about 35 km (22 miles). The baths are signed at the 35th km. The baths lie in a side valley below the road into the Agrafa hills.
  • From Athens or Thessaloniki: Athens is about 290 km (180 miles) away and Thessaloniki about 256 km (159 miles). Head for Karditsa, then follow the road above.
  • By bus: In the bathing season, KTEL Karditsa runs daily buses to the baths.

The official address is the Karditsa-Kedros-Fourna (Evrytania) provincial road. There is parking by the square.

When to go

The main bathing season runs from early or mid-June to mid-October. In 2026 the season opened on Sunday, June 14, with a blessing by the Metropolitan of Thessaliotis. During the season the baths open every day from 08:00 to 20:00.

Outside the season the baths work on a reduced timetable. From October 12, 2026 to May 30, 2027 they open on Fridays from 11:00 to 18:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 18:00. The hotels mostly open from April to the end of the bathing season in October; the Meteora hotel also opens on winter weekends.

In summer the plane trees give the ravine plenty of shade. The baths sometimes stay shut for maintenance before the season starts (in 2024 they reopened on June 14), so check before an early June trip.

  • Mountain roads: The road from Karditsa winds into the hills. Drive it in daylight if you do not know it, especially in winter.

Nearby stops worth adding

Marked trails start at the baths. Route Z13, signed by the Karditsa mountaineering club, runs about 6 km (3.7 miles), roughly three hours, up to the Kastro Menelaidos (976 m) and on through oak and cedar to Loutropigi. Rentina, a listed traditional village a short drive away, has a museum of the National Resistance in Agrafa, a Byzantine church museum and a folklore museum. Lake Smokovo, a reservoir completed in 2003, is close by and has a lakeside restaurant.
