What to expect
Yunokawa Onsen is the hot spring district on Hakodate’s eastern edge, between the city centre and the airport, along the coast of the Tsugaru Strait. The Hakodate Yunokawa Onsen Ryokan Cooperative counts it among Hokkaido’s three great hot spring areas and calls it the closest onsen town to an airport anywhere in Japan, about 5 minutes away by car. It is not a mountain village. It is a city district of large hotels, older ryokan, shops and a tram line, with the sea a few blocks away.
This listing assumes the slug means Hakodate. There is a much smaller Yunokawa Onsen in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, but the Hakodate one is the place most people mean.
What you do here is simple: pick a hotel, pay for a day bath, and soak. Many hotels sell day entry, often for the afternoon and evening, and most advertise source water running straight into the tubs. The town also has a foot bath, a long-running neighbourhood sento, Yukura Shrine and the city’s tropical botanical garden.
History
The cooperative tells several founding stories. The name is usually traced to the Ainu “yu” (hot water) and “pet” (river). Yukura Shrine is said to date to 1453, when a woodcutter healed his injured arm in a spring here and carved a figure of Yakushi Nyorai in thanks. In 1653 the young ninth lord of the Matsumae domain, gravely ill, is said to have recovered after bathing here, and in thanks the domain rebuilt the Yakushi hall. During the Boshin War, Enomoto Takeaki’s former shogunate forces treated their wounded at Yunokawa.
The modern resort dates from 1885, when Ishikawa Tosuke drilled a well that gave water at over 212°F100°C and about 140 litres a minute. A bathhouse opened the next year, the main street was laid out, and trams arrived in 1913. Yunokawa grew into Hakodate’s pleasure quarter and later its main hotel district.

Two more entries need care:
- Umi to Akari (Hewitt Resort) lists a 12th-floor view bath for ¥2,000 (¥1,000 ages 4-12) from 14:00 to 16:00, closed on busy days. The entry is hidden on the current page, so phone 0138-57-5390 first.
- Hanabishi Hotel (normally ¥1,400) had suspended day bathing as of September 2026, with no reopening date.
None of the hotels’ listings say whether water is heated, circulated or chlorinated beyond the “source water” notes above. Bring your own towel unless the table says it is included; most hotels sell or rent them.
Other places to soak and see
- Yumeguri Butai foot bath, Yukawa-cho 1-16-5, near the Yunokawa Onsen tram stop. The cooperative lists Meibi Kogyo (0138-31-5389) as the contact, with hours of 9:00 to 21:00.
- Omori-yu, a neighbourhood sento at Yukawa-cho 2-18-23 (0138-57-6205). Call for hours and price.
- Yukura Shrine (0138-57-8282), the shrine tied to the spring’s founding story.
- Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden (0138-57-7833), the city garden at Yukawa-cho 3-1-15. Its website was down when we checked, so confirm hours and prices by phone.
Getting there
- By tram: the Hakodate city tram runs from Hakodate-Ekimae via Goryokaku-koen-mae to the Yunokawa Onsen and Yunokawa stops, about 31 minutes and ¥240 to Yunokawa.
- By bus: Hakodate Bus route 95 (toward Hiyoshi) runs from Hakodate-Ekimae to Yunokawa Onsen in about 25 minutes for ¥310. Route 96, the airport line, is the usual way back to the station, about 30 minutes. On weekends and holidays the Yunokawa Onsen Liner links the station and the main hotels in about 20 minutes for ¥300.
- From the Shinkansen: an express bus from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station runs via Goryokaku and Hakodate Station to Yunokawa Onsen in about 1 hour 7 minutes for ¥900.
- From the airport: about 5 minutes by car or taxi.
When to go
Yunokawa works all year, and because the baths are indoors as well as out, weather rarely matters. Winter is the classic season: from late November the district runs a long winter illumination, “Fuyu no Akari”, and a hot bath means more when it is below freezing outside. In summer the Yunokawa Onsen fireworks are held in August (the 61st festival was in 2026). Weekday evenings are the quietest time to use hotel day baths.
Rules and etiquette
- Baths are split by sex and you bathe naked. Towels stay out of the water.
- Wash at the taps before you get in.
- No tattoo rule is published by the cooperative. Policies vary by hotel; ask before you go.
- Lodging taxes: Hokkaido charges ¥100 per person per night under ¥20,000, ¥200 from ¥20,000 and ¥500 from ¥50,000. Hakodate city’s own lodging tax, scheduled from April 1, 2026, adds ¥100, ¥200, ¥500, or ¥2,000 from ¥100,000. School-trip groups are exempt from the city tax.
Where to stay nearby
All the hotels above take overnight guests, and the cooperative lists more on its site, from traditional ryokan to large ocean-view hotels. Central Hakodate, around the station, Goryokaku and the Motomachi slopes under Mount Hakodate, is about 30 minutes or more away by tram, so many visitors stay in Yunokawa and sightsee in town. Further afield in Hokkaido, Noboribetsu Onsen and Toyako Onsen are the next big spa towns to the north.
Safety notes
- Hot water: Yunokawa’s source water is very hot. Test tubs and keep soaks short.
- Alcohol: do not bathe after drinking, a real risk in a hotel district.
- Winter footing: pavements ice up in winter. Wear shoes with grip between the tram and the hotels.
- Volcano nearby: Hokkaido Komagatake, north of Hakodate, was raised to JMA Level 2 (near-crater restrictions) on October 2, 2026. It does not affect Yunokawa, but check JMA if you plan to visit the Onuma area.
