What to expect
Niseko Goshiki Onsen sits in a hollow between two volcanic peaks, Niseko Annupuri and Iwaonupuri, on the boundary of Rankoshi and Niseko towns in western Hokkaido. It is one of the onsen of the Niseko Onsen-kyō, but it feels very different from the ski resort villages lower down. Here there is one inn, Niseko Goshiki Onsen Ryokan, a car park and a lot of sky.
The ryokan opened in 1930, and the area was designated a national recreational hot spring resort in 1958. Another lodge, Niseko Yamanoie, stopped operating after the 2016 season, and its building is deteriorating, so the ryokan is in practice the only place to bathe or stay at Goshiki.
Come for the water. It is strongly acidic sulphur water, sharp-smelling and sour, and the views from the open-air baths reach across to Niseko Annupuri. Do not expect a polished resort. Expect a mountain inn that sells day baths.
The water and the baths
The source is classified as an acidic, sulphur-bearing sulphate and chloride spring of the hydrogen sulphide type, emerging at 169°F76.1°C with a pH of 2.6. It carries 4,574 mg of dissolved minerals per kilogram, which is a lot. The annex bath draws from a second source at pH 2.4. The source water is clear, but in the bath guides describe it as pale green, and its colour shifts from day to day; one explanation for the name “Goshiki” (“five colours”) is that the water appears to change through five colours, and another is that there were five kinds of spring.
The rurubu travel guide lists two indoor baths and two open-air baths on each of the men’s and women’s sides, with the open-air bath looking toward Niseko Annupuri as the signature feature, and says the water runs straight from the source. An onsen portal says it is not heated or diluted, although one older visitor review mentioned a hose for adding cold water when the bath is too hot. There is no swimsuit area, and no source describes a mixed bath.
Prices and booking
Day bathing (check before you go, as the guides disagree):
- Adults: ¥1,000 in the rurubu listing, and a visitor reported ¥1,000 in October 2026. Older guides show ¥800.
- Children (age 5 through elementary school): ¥600.
- Hours: 9:00 to 20:00, last entry 19:00. From November to April the day baths open at 10:00. One guide gives winter closing as 19:00.
- Closed days: none listed.
- Parking: free, about 50 spaces.
- Phone: 0136-58-2707.
Overnight guests book with the ryokan directly or through travel sites. A Rakuten Travel figure quoted on an onsen portal starts at ¥6,000 per person, but treat that as a rough guide.
Getting there
There is no public transport. Niseko Bus used to run a summer-only route on weekends and holidays from JR Niseko Station past Shinsen-numa to Goshiki Onsen, but ridership fell to ten or fewer people a day, the route did not run in 2025 because of a driver shortage, and the company abolished it from April 1, 2026. A taxi from Niseko or Kutchan, or your own car, is the only way up. Rurubu puts the drive from JR Niseko Station at about 30 minutes.
From Sapporo, rurubu gives the summer drive as about 80 km (50 miles) and 2 hours from the Sapporo-Otaru Expressway’s Otaru IC via National Route 5 and Prefectural Route 58. In winter it routes you via Route 66, about 93 km (58 miles) and 2 hours 30 minutes.
When to go
Summer and early autumn are easiest. All the mountain roads are open, and the area makes a natural stop on a drive along the Panorama Line past Shinsen-numa.
Winter is a different trip. Two of the approach roads close every year. Niseko town’s 2026-27 notice lists:
- Route 58, Kutchan-Niseko Line (Echo Line): 5.2 km from the Hanazono national forest gate in Kutchan to the Goshiki Onsen gate at the Niseko-Rankoshi boundary, closed from October 13, 2026 to May 21, 2027.
- Route 66, Iwanai-Tōya Line (Panorama Line): 18.3 km between the Oikomi gate in Kyōwa and the Yusato gate in Rankoshi, closed from October 23, 2026 to April 26, 2027.
Those dates are planned and can shift with the weather. The ryokan is listed as open all year, and in winter guides route drivers up from the Niseko town side. The road is high and exposed, and closures for bad weather are possible even on the open section, so call the ryokan before setting out in a storm. A visitor review mentions the open-air bath being closed in winter; ask when you call.
Onsen etiquette
Wash at the taps before you get in, bathe naked, keep your towel out of the water and keep your voice down. Do not take photos in the baths. The water is acidic, so do not let it get into your eyes.
Neither the travel guides nor the onsen portals give a tattoo policy for the ryokan. Phone ahead.
Where to stay nearby
The ryokan is the only lodging at Goshiki. The Niseko Yaeijō campground is nearby, but it has no bath. Niseko town, the Niseko Annupuri ski area and Kutchan have plenty of hotels and pensions. Elsewhere in Hokkaido, see Noboribetsu Onsen and Nukabira.
Safety notes
- Acidic water: at pH 2.4 to 2.6, it stings cuts and eyes. Rinse with fresh water if your skin reacts.
- Hot source: the source is 169°F76°C; the tubs are cooled, but test the water first.
- Mountain weather: snow, fog and strong wind can arrive fast. Carry chains or winter tyres from October to May, and fill up before you leave town.
- Volcanic ground: this is an active geothermal area. Stay on marked paths if you walk around it, and keep away from any steaming vents.

Niseko Goshiki Onsen: common questions
Can you reach Niseko Goshiki Onsen in winter?
Yes, from the Niseko town side. Two approach roads close each winter: Route 58 (the Echo Line) from Hanazono in Kutchan to the Goshiki Onsen gate, closed October 13, 2026 to May 21, 2027, and Route 66 (the Panorama Line) toward Kyowa and Iwanai, closed October 23, 2026 to April 26, 2027. A travel guide gives the winter drive from Otaru via Route 66 as about 93 km and 2 hours 30 minutes. Check road conditions and call the ryokan in heavy snow.
How much is day bathing at Goshiki Onsen?
The rurubu travel guide lists ¥1,000 for adults and ¥600 for children aged 5 through elementary school, and a reviewer reported paying ¥1,000 in October 2026. Older listings show ¥800. Call 0136-58-2707 to confirm.
Is there a bus to Goshiki Onsen?
No. Niseko Bus ran a summer-only route on weekends and holidays from JR Niseko Station to Goshiki Onsen, but it was suspended in 2025 and abolished from April 1, 2026 because of low ridership and a driver shortage. Drive, or take a taxi from Niseko or Kutchan.
What is the water like?
Acidic. The source is an acidic, sulphur-bearing sulphate and chloride spring of the hydrogen sulphide type, 169°F76.1°C at the source and pH 2.6, with a sour taste and a strong sulphur smell. Guides describe the bath water as pale and changing from day to day. One legend says the name, "five colours", comes from those shifts.
Are tattoos allowed?
The listings for the ryokan do not state a policy. Phone 0136-58-2707 before you go.
Can you camp near Goshiki Onsen?
Yes. The Niseko Yaeijō campground is nearby, but it has no bath of its own. The old Niseko Yamanoie lodge closed after the 2016 season, so the ryokan is in practice the only place to stay at the onsen.
