What to expect
Rudas sits at the foot of Gellért Hill, at the Buda end of Elisabeth Bridge, and it is two baths in one building. The old part is a real Ottoman hammam, founded in 1571-72 under Sokollu Mustafa Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Buda. You walk through a dim stone hall into a domed chamber where an octagonal pool sits under the Ottoman dome, with smaller pools around it. It feels very little like a modern spa, which is the point.
The newer part is a wellness wing with hot pools, saunas and, on the roof, a small panorama pool that looks across the Danube to Pest. A separate 20.5 m swimming hall completes the complex. Rudas is run by Budapest Gyógyfürdői (Budapest Spas), the city company that also runs Széchenyi, Lukács and Pesterzsébet.
Nobody under 14 is admitted, and on single-sex days the Turkish bath is quiet and regular-heavy.
The pools
The operator lists:
- Turkish bath (thermal section): six pools at 16, 28, 30, 33, 61-108°F36 and 42°C. The central octagonal pool holds about 30 people; the corner pools about six each. The bath suggests 20 minutes per soak.
- Wellness pools: 32, 90-108°F36 and 42°C, 80-90 cm deep, with neck showers and back jets, plus an 52°F11°C plunge pool.
- Panorama pool (rooftop): 97°F36°C, 90 cm deep, about 16 people. Out of service for technical reasons in October 2026.
- Swimming pool: 84°F29°C, 20.5 m long, 80-180 cm deep.
The saunas include two Finnish saunas (140-158°F60-70°C and 194-212°F90-100°C), an aroma sauna, a steam cabin and a salt room, plus smaller Finnish saunas and a steam room in the Turkish bath and pool area. A drinking fountain (ivókút) opens on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Under the stone inscription naming Mustafa Pasha is the Juve spring, which locals have long credited with keeping them young.
Getting there
Rudas is at Döbrentei tér 9 in the 1st district, right beside the Buda end of Elisabeth Bridge.
- Trams 19, 41, 56 and 56A run along the Buda embankment and stop at the bath.
- Buses 7, 8E, 108E, 110 and 112 cross Elisabeth Bridge from Pest.
- Night buses 907 and 973 serve the stop after a night session.
From Pest you can also simply walk across Elisabeth Bridge. Parking is scarce here; take public transport.
When to go
Rudas is open every day of the year. Weekday mornings are the calmest time in the Turkish bath. Fridays and weekends are busier and cost more.
Pick your day by the timetable. In 2026 the Turkish bath runs:

- Tuesday: women only all day, 6:00-20:00.

Bathing culture
Rudas is the best place in Budapest to see the old Ottoman bathing pattern. On the men’s and women’s days the bath gives out aprons and one reusable sheet per ticket. House rules require two aprons, covering the genitals and the buttocks, and ban wearing an apron in the lobby. Hand the sheet back where staff tell you. Mixed sessions and the wellness wing are swimsuit areas.
Move between pools the way regulars do: a hot pool, then the cold plunge, then rest. Shower first. Leave your phone in the locker; regulars do not expect to be photographed. Swim caps are compulsory in the swimming pool. On the roof, glass is banned, drinks are allowed only in plastic cups from the bath’s own bar, and throwing water, snow or anything else down onto the street is forbidden.
Where to stay nearby
There is no lodging at the bath. The Tabán and Gellért Hill side of Buda is quiet and walkable; most visitors stay across the river in the 5th district, a short walk over Elisabeth Bridge. For a bath crawl, Lukács is about 3 km (2 miles) north on the same bank, Széchenyi is in City Park on the Pest side, and Pesterzsébet is in the city’s south. For another Ottoman dome, try Veli Bej near Lukács. Gellért, a few hundred metres south along the embankment, has been closed for renovation since October 1, 2025.
Safety notes
- Heat: The 108°F42°C pools are hot. Keep soaks short, drink water and get out slowly, especially after a night out.
- Cold plunge: Shower first and do not jump into the 52°F or 61°F11°C or 16°C pools straight from a hot sauna.
- Footing: Stone and tile floors in the old hall are wet and slippery. Wear slippers.
- Mobility: In October 2026 the bath could not take guests with reduced mobility because the stairlift was out of service.
