- Tickets are for 3 hours, sold at the desk only, and nobody under 14 is admitted.
What to expect
Veli Bej is the least known of Buda’s Ottoman baths, and the one that feels most like a working historic bath rather than a tourist stop. It is hidden inside the grounds of the Budapest hospital of the Order of St John of God (the Irgalmas rend, also called the Brothers Hospitallers), on the Buda bank just north of Margaret Bridge. The signs say Irgalmasok Veli Bej Fürdője, the Veli Bej bath of the Hospitallers.
The core is a 16th-century domed bath, with a central octagonal pool under the dome. Four smaller pools sit in side chambers around it, each at a different temperature. A modern wing added during the restoration has a lap pool, a jacuzzi, a Kneipp walking pool, saunas and steam rooms. It is a small, calm place: people come for three hours of quiet soaking, not for slides or parties.
The bath’s own website (velibej.hu) and the hospital site were not reachable when we checked in October 2026, so the prices and hours here come from independent guides updated in July and September 2026. Treat them as a strong guide, not gospel.
The pools
As reported by a September 2026 guide:
- Central octagonal pool: about 97-100°F36-38°C, under the main dome.
- Four corner pools: about 72°F22°C, 82°F28°C, 90°F32°C and 104°F40°C, so you can move from hot to cool and back.
- Modern wing: a lap pool (swim cap required), a jacuzzi and a Kneipp walking pool, plus a Finnish sauna, an infrared sauna and steam chambers.
The same guide says the water flows through the pools and is not chlorinated. On Saturday mornings from 9 to noon the lap pool and Kneipp pool are reported to be closed.
Getting there
The address is Árpád fejedelem útja 7, 1023 Budapest, in District II. The entrance is inside the hospital complex; look for the Veli Bej signs and a small café by the door.
- From Pest: take tram 4 or 6 across Margaret Bridge to Margit híd, budai hídfő, then walk a few minutes north.
- From south Buda or Batthyány tér (M2): trams 17, 19 or 41 stop nearby (Komjádi Béla utca or the Szent Lukács Gyógyfürdő stop).
Lukács Bath is a couple of minutes’ walk away on the same street, and the Császár-Komjádi sports pool next door was once part of the same bath complex. Parking in District II is paid and scarce; come by tram.
When to go
The bath opens all year in two sessions a day, 6 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and is closed from noon to 3 p.m. The September 2026 guide says Monday and Tuesday have the afternoon session only. Mid-week mornings are the cheapest and quietest. Evenings and weekends get busier, and since the bath is small, it can feel full.
Plan around the summer maintenance closure: in 2026 the bath was shut from August 13 to September 4, and the length changes each year. Guides also report closures on Easter weekend and at Pentecost, which fits a bath run by a religious order.
Prices and booking
There is no online booking; you pay at the desk, by cash or card. SZÉP cards are reportedly not accepted. Each ticket is for 3 hours, and overstaying costs HUF 40 a minute. Reported 2026 prices:
- Monday and Tuesday afternoon: HUF 6,700.
- Wednesday and Thursday: HUF 5,700 morning, HUF 6,700 afternoon.
- Friday: HUF 5,700 morning, HUF 7,200 afternoon.
- Saturday, Sunday and holiday periods (December 27 to January 4 and March 15): HUF 7,200.
Extras reported: towel HUF 1,100, slippers HUF 1,900, a HUF 1,000 cash deposit for a locker safe, and HUF 5,000 for a lost wristband. Massages of 20 to 65 minutes are sold at the desk, subject to availability.
Bathing culture
Veli Bej is mixed, with swimsuits worn throughout, according to current guides. Some older Budapest guidebooks mention single-sex days at the Turkish baths; we found no current source for them here, so ask the bath if that matters to you.
Shower before you go in. Bring flip-flops or rent slippers, and a swim cap if you want to use the lap pool. Under the dome, the custom is to move slowly between the hot and cold pools and keep voices low; this is not a place for loud groups. Nobody under 14 is admitted.
Where to stay nearby
There is no lodging at the bath. The streets around Margaret Bridge and Batthyány tér on the Buda side have hotels and apartments within walking distance, and central Pest is one tram ride across the bridge. If you want a bigger bath for a second day, Lukács is next door (see the Lukács listing).
Safety notes
- Heat: the 104°F40°C corner pool is hot enough to make you dizzy. Use it in short spells and cool off in the 72°F22°C pool.
- Health: people with heart or blood pressure problems should check with a doctor before using hot thermal pools.
- Wet stone: the old stone floors are slippery. Wear slippers.
- Time: watch the clock; the 3-hour limit is enforced with a per-minute charge.
History
The bath dates from Ottoman rule in Buda, and Hungarian sources say it was probably built in the 1570s for Sokollu Mustafa, the beylerbey of Buda. By the 18th century the site was known as the Császár (Emperor) bath. In 1806 royal councillor Károly Marczibányi bought it and gave it to the Order of St John of God. József Hild rebuilt and enlarged the complex in the 1840s. After decades as part of the Császár sports pool, the old Turkish section returned to the order in 2000, and its restoration was completed in 2011.

Irgalmasok Veli Bej Fürdője (Veli Bej Bath): common questions
How much does Veli Bej Bath cost in 2026?
The bath's own website was not reachable in October 2026. A guide updated in September 2026 lists 3-hour tickets at HUF 5,700 for Wednesday to Friday mornings, HUF 6,700 for Monday to Thursday afternoons, and HUF 7,200 for Friday afternoons, weekends and holiday periods. Staying over 3 hours costs HUF 40 a minute. Towel hire is about HUF 1,100.
What are the opening hours of Veli Bej?
Veli Bej opens in two sessions, 6 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and closes in between. The same September 2026 guide says there is no morning session on Mondays and Tuesdays; older guides show mornings every day. Ticket sales stop an hour before each session ends. Check with the bath (+36 1 438 8587) if you plan an early visit.
Are there separate men's and women's days at Veli Bej?
Current 2026 guides describe Veli Bej as mixed at all sessions, with swimsuits worn throughout. We found no current source for single-sex days. Call the bath before you go if this matters to you.
Can children go to Veli Bej Bath?
No. Nobody under 14 is admitted, and guides report that staff check at the door. Lukács Bath nearby has the same rule, so families with younger children need a lido or a family bath elsewhere.
When is Veli Bej closed?
It shuts for maintenance every summer, for a different length each year. In 2026 it closed from August 13 to September 4. Guides also report closures on Easter weekend and at Pentecost. It is closed every day between noon and 3 p.m.
