What to expect
Gyulai Várfürdő is one of the big provincial baths of the Great Plain, and it has a better setting than most. The complex fills a wooded park beside Gyula Castle, a brick fortress in the middle of town, and the old trees give the outdoor pools real shade in summer. The bath had close to 600,000 visits in 2024, so this is not a quiet backwater, but the grounds are large enough that it rarely feels packed outside summer weekends.
The water comes from a well drilled in 1958, and the bath opened on May 1, 1959. The bath describes it as sodium hydrogen carbonate water, and it turns the medicinal pools a reddish brown. It is a thermal mineral water rather than anything exotic: no strong smell, just warm, soft and coloured.
The complex has several parts, and your day ticket does not cover all of them:
- The thermal bath and outdoor pools: the medicinal pools inside the Lovarda, the outdoor thermal pools in the park and, in summer, the lido pools. This is the basic ticket.
- AquaPalota: an indoor family water park opened in 2013, with slides, a lazy river and a diving pool. Add-on ticket.
- Castello Sauna Park: indoor and outdoor saunas with scheduled sauna sessions. Add-on ticket.
- Sports pools: a 50 m pool, tented over in the cold months, and a 25 m teaching pool.
The pools
The medicinal pools are what most adult visitors come for. Temperatures as published by the bath:
- Polip pool: 97-100°F36-38°C, part indoor, part outdoor. You swim out of the Lovarda rest area into the park. It runs through the winter, and it is the pool to choose on a frosty day.
- Shaded No. 1 pool: 97-100°F36-38°C, outdoors under a wooden canopy built in 1981, with neck showers and massage jets.
- Bubble pool: 90-93°F32-34°C, outdoors, with 12 bubble heads and 4 hydromassage jets. Cool enough for small children.
- Massage-jet pool: 90-93°F32-34°C, outdoors, with heavy falling jets.
- Lovarda pools (indoors): a small pool at 97-100°F36-38°C, a large pool at 93-95°F34-35°C, the butterfly-shaped family pool at 93-97°F34-36°C with a hoist, and a 20 m medicinal swimming pool at 82-86°F28-30°C.
The AquaPalota pools are fresh-water leisure pools at 81-97°F27-36°C. In summer the lido adds a wave pool and a slide pool at 79-82°F26-28°C and a children’s water park at 86-90°F30-32°C, with over 800 square metres of splash features.
The indoor wellness pool under the dome has been closed for technical reasons for an indefinite period, and the sauna park plunge pool is also out of use.
Getting there
The bath is in the centre of Gyula, a small town in Békés County close to the Romanian border. Gyula is about 15 km (9 miles) east of Békéscsaba, the county seat, and roughly 195 km (121 miles) south-east of Budapest in a straight line; the drive is longer. Arad and Oradea in Romania are both within about 70 km (43 miles).
The main entrance is at Maróthy tér 2. There are also cash desks at the Fahíd (wooden bridge) and Kőhíd (stone bridge) entrances, which stay open all year; the summer main entrance closes outside the lido season. Parking around the bath is in the town’s paid zones, at HUF 360 an hour in 2026. There is no free lot.
Gyula has a railway station and bus links to Békéscsaba, and the bath is a walk from the town centre.
When to go
The bath is open every day of the year, and the experience changes a lot with the season.
Summer brings the lido pools and the longest hours (the bath usually stays open to 8 p.m. in July and August). It is also the busiest time. The 2026 peak periods ran June 20 to September 6, October 23 to November 1 and November 11, and the AquaPalota can reach its licensed capacity on those days, when ticket sales for it are paused. Call ahead (+36 66 561 350) in school holidays.
Autumn and winter suit the medicinal pools. The outdoor pools close one at a time as the weather turns. In 2026 the massage-jet pool closed after November 1, the bubble pool runs until November 30 and the shaded No. 1 pool stays open until the frosts. The Polip pool keeps going all winter.
Two works notices for late 2026: the Polip rest area is being renovated from September 7 to November 20, 2026 (the Polip pool stays open but you reach it from outdoors only), and the AquaPalota closes for maintenance from November 2 to 6.

Tickets are sold at the cash desks; there is no need to book. 2026 prices, valid from June 20, 2026:

The bath accepts SZÉP cards from OTP, MBH and K&H. Groups of more than 20 get 10% off. Locals with a Gyula card pay much less. Medical treatments (mud packs, weight bath, underwater massage and more) are sold separately, with or without Hungarian health insurance support; they need a doctor’s consultation first.
Bathing culture
This is a Hungarian town bath, and it runs on local habits. Swimsuits are worn everywhere, and the house rules limit them to knee length on the legs and shoulder length on the arms, so a full-cover suit may be turned away. Shower before you get in. Swim caps are compulsory in the 25 m and 50 m pools, not in the thermal pools.
Non-slip slippers are compulsory in pool areas, and you will see regulars in robes moving between pools. Each medicinal pool has a posted time limit; the bath suggests two sessions of about 30 minutes a day unless a doctor says otherwise. Keep the noise down in the hot pools. Sunbeds inside the buildings are first come, first served.
Where to stay nearby
There is no hotel inside the bath grounds, but central Gyula has hotels and guesthouses within walking distance, and many sell packages that include bath tickets. Békéscsaba, 15 km (9 miles) away, has more choice. If you are touring Hungarian baths, Hagymatikum in Makó is the next big bath to the south-west (see the Hagymatikum listing).
Safety notes
- Heat: the 97-100°F36-38°C pools are hot enough to strain the heart. The bath advises people with heart disease or high blood pressure to use the cooler pools, and doctors list other conditions where treatment is not advised. Respect the posted time limits.
- Children: under-10s must be supervised, and adults may not use the children’s pools except to watch a child.
- Slips: wet tiles around the pools are slick; wear the slippers.
- No glass: glasses and bottles are banned in pool areas.
Nearby stops worth adding
Gyula Castle, the medieval brick fortress the bath is named after, stands at the edge of the bath park and makes an easy hour before or after a soak. The town centre is a short walk away. Ferenc Erkel, who composed the music of the Hungarian national anthem, was born in Gyula, and the bath itself plays on that link.
