What to expect
This is a working town bath rather than a resort. The Árpád Gyógy- és Strandfürdő sits close to the centre of Békéscsaba, on the Great Plain near the Romanian border, between Árpád sor and the Élővíz canal. Locals swim laps before work, pensioners take their prescribed soaks in the medicinal pools, and families fill the outdoor strand in summer. Prices are low by Hungarian standards, and the building has real history.
A note on the name. Several Hungarian baths have similar English names, and this slug does not name a town. The bath officially called Árpád Gyógy- és Strandfürdő, which translates as Árpád Thermal and Beach Bath, is the one in Békéscsaba, so that is the place covered here. Sárvár’s spa has a separate listing.
The operator lists ten pools and eight swimming lanes. The core of the place is the thermal pools, at 97-100°F36-38°C, filled with what the operator calls qualified medicinal water. The bath’s history page says the first successful thermal well was drilled in 1959 to 1,974 m, which turned it into a year-round bath, and a second well drilled in 1978 to 800 m gives 104°F40°C water for the outdoor pools. The water was certified as medicinal in the early 2000s, and in 2006 the health minister declared the Árpád a medicinal bath.
The 50 m pool runs at 79°F26°C, with a teaching pool and a giant slide alongside; it can be partly closed for swimming competitions. There is a shallow children’s pool with a play area, an outdoor adventure pool with a bubble bath and neck showers, and a sauna world with two Finnish saunas, a steam cabin and a plunge pool.
History
The outdoor bath opened in 1922 with a single open-air concrete pool. On November 14, 1927 the town opened the covered steam and bathing house designed by Henrik Böhm and Ármin Hegedűs, with bathtubs, 82 cabins and a hydrotherapy institute upstairs. A new 50 m pool followed in 1964, and a large reconstruction in 2002-2003 gave the complex its current form.
Getting there
The address is Árpád sor 3, 5600 Békéscsaba.
- By car: Békéscsaba is roughly 180 km (112 miles) south-east of Budapest as the crow flies. Follow signs for the town centre, then for Árpád fürdő. A guest review site lists free parking.
- By train: Békéscsaba has direct trains from Budapest. From the station, the bath is a short taxi or local bus ride, or a walk through town.
When to go
The bath opens at 6 a.m. every day and closes at 8 p.m., weekends and holidays included. Early mornings are the quietest time and come with the cheapest ticket. Summer weekends are the busiest, when the outdoor strand and the sunbathing lawn are open; the strand opened for 2026 on May 1.
Each autumn the bath shuts for maintenance. In 2026 the closure ran from September 20 to October 2, with the autumn and winter timetable starting on October 3. Expect something similar in late September 2027 and check the news page before you travel.

Bathing culture
Shower before you use any pool; the house rules require it. Bring a swim cap: it is compulsory in the shared pools where signs say so, which in Hungary usually means the lap pools. Street shoes are banned in the covered pool halls, and flip-flops are recommended outside because of slippery tiles, but footwear is not allowed inside the saunas. The saunas need swimwear, jewellery and glasses come off, and photos are banned in the saunas and steam cabin.
The medicinal pool is for sitting, not swimming, with a limit of 30 minutes per soak. Alcohol is allowed only at the buffet, and no glass bottles or drinking glasses may go near the pools.
Where to stay nearby
Békéscsaba has hotels and guesthouses within walking distance of the bath. Gyula, about 14 km (9 miles) to the south-east, makes a good second stop: its Gyula Várfürdő castle bath is one of the best-known spas on the Great Plain.
Safety notes
- Heat: the thermal pools are close to body temperature or a little above. The 30-minute rule exists for a reason; get out if you feel dizzy, and check with a doctor if you have heart or blood pressure problems.
- Children: under-14s must come with an adult, and non-swimmers must stay out of deep water.
- Slides: under-10s may not ride the slides. Wait until the rider before you has passed the yellow marker.
- Saunas: the operator recommends 8-15 minutes at a time and does not recommend saunas for children under 14.
