What to expect
The Thermenresort Loipersdorf is a big, long-established thermal resort in the rolling hills of the Thermen- und Vulkanland in southeast Styria, about 10 minutes by car from Fürstenfeld. The operator counts 35 pools and 20 saunas across the whole resort, plus 23,000 m² (about 5.7 acres) of outdoor lawns and pools that open from spring to autumn.
It is organised into three areas:
- Thermenbad: the classic thermal bath, with large indoor and outdoor thermal pools, a pool bar and the Saunadorf (sauna village).
- Erlebnisbad: the fun bath for families, with slides, a white-water channel, a sports pool and a Baby Beach.
- Schaffelbad: a separate adults-only wellness area for guests 16 and over.
A handful of hotels sit right next to the resort and connect to it by bathrobe corridors. Rogner Bad Blumau, the Hundertwasser spa, is about 22 km (14 miles) north.
The water
Loipersdorf’s water is real thermal water, and hot. Wikipedia tells the story: in June 1972 the oil company RAG drilled the “Binderberg 1” well near Neubrennten looking for oil and gas. On July 10 a gas-bearing layer caused a blowout, and hot water came up instead. More drilling on the Lautenberg in 1977 found water at 1,100 to 1,200 m.
Today the resort draws about 226 million litres a year from four springs: Lautenberg, Binderberg, Barbara and Rehgraben. The operator says the water rises at 144°F62°C, heated in part by rising carbon dioxide, contains about 7,500 mg of dissolved minerals per litre and is more than 29,500 years old. It only needs to be cooled slightly for bathing. The resort says it leaves a soft film on the skin, a bit like lotion.
Pool temperatures listed by the operator:
- Thermal pool outdoor: 97°F36°C, 1.6 m deep, looking out over the hills.
- Thermal pool indoor: 97°F36°C, 1.3-1.6 m deep, with the pool bar.
- Thermal whirlpool (outdoor): 97°F36°C.
- Hot and cold pool: 100°F and 68°F38°C and 20°C.
- Erlebnisbad play and sports pools: 90°F and 88°F32°C and 31°C, filled with thermal water.
- Wildbach (white-water channel): 90°F32°C.
- Summer outdoor area: wave pool at 79°F26°C and diving pool at 75°F24°C.
Sauna culture
All saunas at Loipersdorf are textile-free, in both the Saunadorf and the Schaffelbad. The resort asks you to sit on a towel large enough that your feet are on it too, and says you may cover your intimate area with a breathable cloth or sauna wear if you want. Swimsuits stay on in the pools, except where signs in the Schaffelbad say otherwise.
The Saunadorf in the Thermenbad has six saunas: a 194°F90°C Finnish sauna called Kraftquelle, an 185°F85°C outdoor Finnish sauna with a forest view, two bio saunas at 131°F and 149°F55°C and 65°C, and a 108°F42°C volcanic steam bath built with basalt. Children may enter from age 13, with an adult until they turn 16. The Schaffelbad has its own larger sauna landscape and is for ages 16 and up. Guided infusions run daily.

Loipersdorf is open all year and on most holidays. Prices tell you when it is busy: weekends, holidays and all school holidays cost more. Weekdays in term time are the best value and the quietest.
