What to expect
Sierra Grande is the quiet, polished end of the Truth or Consequences bathhouse district. It is a small lodge on McAdoo Street, on the north side of the downtown springs area, owned and run by Ted Turner Reserves, the company that manages Turner’s big ranch properties in New Mexico. You may still see it listed under its older name, Sierra Grande Lodge & Spa. The current branding is “Sierra Grande, a Ted Turner Retreat.”
Where some T or C bathhouses are funky motels, this one feels more like a boutique hotel with a spa attached. There are 17 guest rooms in the main lodge and a separate casita. Breakfast is served every morning. Massages, facials and other treatments run alongside the soaks, and guests often move between the two in robes. The mood is calm. Staff ask everyone to keep voices low because the tubs sit close to the treatment rooms.
The lodge draws its water from the geothermal aquifer under downtown. Ted Turner Reserves gives the water temperature as about 104°F40°C, and Sierra County’s tourism office says the private baths reach up to 107°F42°C. The county describes the town’s spring water as odorless and pH neutral, with about 2,700 ppm of dissolved minerals, mostly chloride.
The tubs
Everything here is private. You book a tub for your group and have it to yourselves. According to the county listing, the four baths are:
- Two indoor stamped-concrete tubs, each for one or two people.
- One large indoor ceramic tile bath that holds up to eight, useful for families or a small group.
- One outdoor stucco and tile bath under a pergola, for up to four.
The outdoor tub is the one to ask for on a clear winter evening. The indoor rooms are the better choice on a hot summer afternoon or a windy spring day.
Some rooms bring the water inside too. The county says two downstairs rooms have mineral water piped to their bathtubs, every room has a large sunken tub, and the two-bedroom casita next to the main building has its own private hot spring bath. The upstairs two-room suite has a jetted tub, but it uses city water.
Prices and booking
Sierra Grande does not post soak prices on its own website. The figures below come from the Sierra County tourism listing, so treat them as a guide and confirm by phone:
- Walk-in private soak: $30 for the first person, plus $5 to $10 for each extra person aged 12 or older.
- Overnight guests: one free 30-minute soak per day in one of the four private tubs. A one-night stay covers two soaks, one on each calendar day.
Walk-in hours are shorter than at some neighbors. The county lists roughly 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and in high season, and 8 a.m. to 7 or 8 p.m. on weekdays and off season. Lodging guests can use the baths from 7 a.m. to 10:45 p.m.
Book soaks and spa treatments in the lobby or call the spa line at 575-894-6976. For rooms, the general reservations number is 877-288-7637. The lodge also hosts executive retreats of 10 to 40 people and full buyouts, which need three to six months’ notice, so a weekend can occasionally be fully booked by a group.
Rules and etiquette
- Quiet first. There is no age limit, but noise carries to the spa rooms, so keep conversations low. Children are welcome if they can keep it calm.
- Pets: only in a few designated rooms, one pet under 25 pounds per room.
- Respect your time slot. Sessions are short (30 minutes for guest soaks), and the next booking may be waiting.
- Book spa treatments separately. Massages, facials and body treatments are on the menu, and the lobby handles both soaks and treatments.
Getting there
Truth or Consequences sits on Interstate 25, about two hours from both Albuquerque and El Paso. Take I-25 Exit 79 and follow Date Street into downtown. Sierra Grande is at 501 McAdoo Street, about 0.2 mile from the T or C visitor center. The other bathhouses, including Pelican Spa and Riverbend Hot Springs, are a few blocks south toward the Rio Grande, so you can easily walk between them.
When to go
Hot tubs and the Chihuahuan Desert make the most sense from October to April, when days are mild and nights get cold. Summer afternoons in Sierra County are hot, and a 104°F40°C tub is easier to enjoy early in the morning or after dark. Guests can soak until 10:45 p.m.
Weekday walk-ins have longer hours and less competition for tubs. Weekends fill with overnight guests and spa bookings, and walk-in hours end mid-afternoon.
Where to stay nearby
Staying at Sierra Grande gets you breakfast, served daily from 7 to 10 a.m., and a daily soak. Lodging options are rooms in the main lodge and the private two-bedroom casita. The county’s group listing shows room rates from $99 to $399, though nightly prices vary with season and demand.
Close by in the same district:
- Riverbend Hot Springs has outdoor pools on the river, rooms, casitas and a few RV spaces. Guests must be 12 or older.
- Pelican Spa is a pet-friendly motel with private concrete tubs and cheaper rooms.
- Elephant Butte Lake State Park, which the lodge puts at 16 miles away, has lakeside campgrounds.
Safety notes
- Heat: Water around 104 to 107°F40 to 42°C raises your heart rate quickly. Keep soaks short, drink water, and skip the tub after alcohol. Talk to a doctor first if you are pregnant or have heart or blood pressure problems.
- Kids: If you bring children, cool them off between soaks and keep an eye on them in the large tile bath.
- Stairs: The lodge has two floors. If stairs are hard for you, ask for a downstairs room, which is also where the rooms with mineral water tubs are.
Nearby stops worth adding
The lodge runs guided eco-tours to the Armendaris and Ladder ranches, two of Turner’s private reserves in southern New Mexico. In town, the Geronimo Springs Museum covers local history and the Truth or Consequences Brewing Co. is a short walk away. Hatch, known for its green chile, is about 38 miles south.
