  • The cave is artificial: 760 m of themed rock passages and about 1,500 m² of water surface, opened in 2015.

What to expect

The Cascade Cave Bath is not a natural cave. It is a themed, man-made cave system built into the side of the Hegyeskő valley at Demjén, a village about 12 km (7.5 miles) from Eger in northern Hungary. The operator describes it as the largest cave bath in Central Europe: 760 m of passages with about 1,500 m² of water. Rock walls, coloured lights, fairy and dragon statues and hanging plants line the route, and the operator says the look was inspired by the film Avatar.

It opened in 2015 next to the Hotel Cascade Resort & Spa, a four-star hotel, and the older outdoor medicinal bath and aquapark. One ticket covers the cave bath and the outdoor bath, which is the real draw for many visitors: the outdoor pools stay open until 2 a.m. every day.

Expect families, school groups in the holidays and couples from Eger and Budapest. It is a leisure complex with medicinal water, not a quiet spa.

The pools

Inside the cave, Visit Hungary lists an adventure pool called the Fairy Cave with bubble beds, a pool called the Cave of Secrets, a thermal pool called the Thermal Bay, a children’s area called Fairy Tale Island with several children’s pools, and a 133 m lazy river. A slide tower sunk into the hillside has about 550 m of sliding surface. The ticket includes a sauna area.

The operator does not publish temperatures for individual pools, so we have left them out. Ask at the desk which pools carry the medicinal water if that matters to you.

The outdoor medicinal bath and aquapark next door has outdoor medicinal pools, a seasonal swimming pool, outdoor slides and a diving pool. Its indoor medicinal pools, Finnish sauna with plunge pool, steam cabin, Kneipp pool and salt cabin open only from Friday to Sunday.

The water comes from a well drilled in 2006 in the Hegyeskő valley, from 690 m down. The operator describes it as hard, sodium-calcium-hydrogen carbonate medicinal water containing fluoride and sulphur, with notable iron and metasilicic acid. The hotel was classed as a medicinal hotel (gyógyszálló) from February 2015 after an inspection by the national public health office. The operator markets the water for joint and rheumatic complaints and advises people with heart failure, circulation problems, high blood pressure, asthma or pregnancy not to use it.

Getting there

The complex is at Demjén, HRSZ 83/30 (postcode 3395), at the foot of the Bükk hills on the edge of the village, about 120 m from the first houses.

  • From Budapest: about 128 km (80 miles), under 1.5 hours by car. Take the M3 motorway to the Füzesabony exit and drive via Kerecsend to Demjén, or leave main road 3 at the Kerecsend turn.
  • From Eger: about 12 km (7.5 miles) by road.
  • By bus: take a bus to Eger, then the scheduled local bus to Demjén from the Petőfi utca stop, about 20 minutes.

Parking is free, and so are lockers.

When to go

The cave bath is open all year and keeps its regular hours on public holidays. Normal hours are Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The slide park starts at 11 a.m. on weekdays. During the autumn school break, October 23 to November 1, 2026, the cave opens at 9 a.m. on most days. Pools close 30 minutes before the building does.

The operator lists Saturdays, school holidays, public holidays and peak season as its busiest times. Weekday mornings in term time are the quietest. A weekday evening ticket, sold after 5 p.m. except on Saturdays, is a good way to do the cave and then move outside for a late soak.

The wristband also works as a payment card for food and drink inside. Demjén has other baths in the same thermal valley run separately, so check that you are at the Cascade desk.

Bathing culture

Hungarian bath rules apply. Shower before you get in, wear a proper swimsuit in all pools, and in the sauna use a towel or sauna sheet instead of a swimsuit. Babies who are not toilet-trained must wear swim nappies. Children under 14 must be with a parent or adult at all times and are not advised to use the sauna. Food from the restaurant stays out of the pool area, and you must be dry and in slippers to enter the self-service restaurant. Anyone drunk or under the influence of drugs can be asked to leave.

Where to stay nearby

The Hotel Cascade Resort & Spa is part of the complex and has a 24-hour reception. Eger, 12 km away, has a wide choice of hotels and guesthouses and makes a good base for a trip that combines the baths with Eger Castle and the wine cellars of the Szépasszony-völgy. The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath, which is in natural caves, is roughly an hour away by road if you want to compare the two.

Safety notes

  • Slides: Children under 120 cm may use only the children’s slides. Tie long hair back so it cannot catch.
  • Deep pools: The Hagyma, UFO and Anakonda pools are for swimmers aged 14 and over only.
  • Medicinal water: Do not stay in the warm medicinal pools for long stretches, and check with a doctor first if you have heart or circulation problems, high blood pressure or are pregnant.
  • Late nights: The outdoor bath is open until 2 a.m. Paths get dark and wet, so take care if you have been drinking, and do not drive afterwards.
  • No animals: Pets are not allowed anywhere on the premises.
