What to expect
Bogács is a wine village on the southern slopes of the Bükk hills, between Eger and Mezőkövesd, and its thermal bath is the reason most visitors come. It has none of the polish of the big resort spas. What it has is medicinal water in plain open-air pools, a campsite next to the pools and a steady crowd of families and people on longer soaking stays.
The bath runs eleven pools for the public in summer: six medicinal pools, a covered adventure pool with its own paddling pool, two children’s pools and a swimming pool. A twelfth pool belongs to the Jurta holiday centre. The operator says the medicinal pools are not recirculated, which is common for Hungarian medicinal water and means the pools are filled with water straight from the wells.
The medicinal pools
- Large medicinal pool: 27 x 13 m, 95-99°F35-37°C, from age 6. About 60% of it sits under a curved roof on columns built from local Bogács stone. Open every day of the year.
- Twin pools: two 15 x 15 m pools side by side, one at 95°F35°C and one at 99°F37°C, for over-18s. Built in 1973.
- Butterfly pool: two linked halves, one with a jacuzzi, 95-99°F35-37°C, over-18s.
- Indoor medicinal pool in the Thermál Apartmanok: 93-97°F34-36°C, over-18s.
The rest
The covered adventure pool (86-93°F30-34°C, 86-93°F30-34°C) has neck showers, bubble beds and seated hydromassage and is open all year. In summer you also get a 33 m swimming pool at 75-79°F24-26°C, a water playground for under-6s, a ball pool for 4-10s and a slide park opened in 2014, with three slides from a 9 m tower. In July 2026 the operator said the ball pool was closed for reconstruction, and the covered adventure pool was free on weekdays for children aged 4 to 14 until it reopens.
History
The water was found by accident. On October 9, 1955 an oil exploration crew drilling north of the village had a mishap with the drill string, and minutes later 140-158°F60-70°C water began pouring out of the hole. The well was capped, and a proper thermal well was drilled in 1958-59, hitting water at 485 m. Villagers dug the first pool by hand. The twin pool followed in 1973, the swimming pool in 1987, and the village took over the bath in 1993. The water was officially declared medicinal in 2001.
Getting there
The bath is at Dózsa György utca 16, 3412 Bogács, in the Thermálbogács part of the village.
- By car from Budapest: take the M3 motorway east and leave at the Mezőkövesd exit, then head north towards Bogács. The village is about 12 km (7 miles) north of Mezőkövesd as the crow flies, and about 11 km (7 miles) south-east of Eger.
- From Eger or Miskolc: follow local roads through the Bükkalja villages; Miskolc is about 29 km (18 miles) to the north-east as the crow flies.
There is a main entrance with a year-round ticket office, and in summer a second ticket office at the rear entrance.
When to go
The medicinal pools are open every day in every season, so a winter visit works as well as a summer one, just with fewer pools. July and August are the busiest months. The summer price list applies from June 20, and the outdoor swimming pool stays open until September 30.
Over the past year the bath has had several renovation closures. The far half of the twin pool was closed from October 20, 2025 to about April 25, 2026, and the Thermál A building (with the small indoor medicinal pool) shut from January 12 to April 2, 2026. Check the news page or call the bath before you travel, since the official website blocks automated checks and could not be read directly for this guide.

Bathing culture
Most people here are in the medicinal pools to sit, chat and soak, not to swim. Keep to the 20-minute soaks the operator recommends, take a break and go back in. Shower first, wear flip-flops on the paths, and bring your own towel. A swim cap is wise in the swimming pool.
Where to stay nearby
The bath has its own lodging: the year-round Thermál Kemping with cabins, the Thermál Panzió with nine rooms, the Thermál Apartmanok, the Patak-party apartments and the Jurta holiday centre, whose guests have a pool with a retractable roof. The village has many more guesthouses, and Bogács is also known for its wine cellars.
Other baths within an easy drive: Zsóry in Mezőkövesd, Saliris at Egerszalók, the Demjén cascade cave bath and the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath.
Safety notes
- Medical cautions: the operator lists cases where you should not use the medicinal water, including the three months after a heart attack, blood pressure above 180/120, fever, infectious disease, pregnancy and cancer. Ask a doctor if unsure.
- Age limits: several medicinal pools are adults only; staff enforce it.
- Heat: 99°F37°C is warm enough to tire you over a long day. Drink water and rest in the shade between soaks.
