What to expect

Aquarius is the all-weather centrepiece of Sóstógyógyfürdő, the lakeside spa suburb a few kilometres north of central Nyíregyháza in north-eastern Hungary. It is run by the town’s spa company alongside the summer-only Parkfürdő and Tófürdő, and it holds the top five-star rating from the Hungarian Baths Association, awarded in 2017. Think of it as a water park and a thermal bath under one roof, rather than a quiet historic spa.

The operator splits the building into zones. The Élményvilág (adventure world) has the wave pool, a wild-water channel and the slides, with water at 75-82°F24-28°C. The Termálvilág (thermal world) is where you soak: a covered thermal pool, a jacuzzi, hot and cold Kneipp pools and an outdoor thermal pool that looks out towards Sóstó lake, with temperatures listed from 61°F16°C in the cold pools up to 104°F40°C in the hottest water. A Gyermekvilág (children’s world) runs at 86-90°F30-32°C. The tourism office describes the water as iodine-bromine medicinal water, and the outdoor pool uses it. Sóstó’s thermal water was found in the late 1950s, when drilling hit water at around 122°F50°C.

There are eight slides. The biggest is the Kanyargó or Black Hole, an enclosed tube 110 m long that starts 12.8 m up, for riders aged 12 and over who are taller than 120 cm. An open slide of 100 m starts at 10.3 m. The family and Kamikaze slides are short and steep, and four small slides serve children under 10. On weekdays the Black Hole and Kamikaze open only on Fridays from noon; at weekends they run from 9 a.m.

The Szaunavilág is a separate sauna house with a Finnish sauna, a non-infusion sauna, an aroma sauna and a steam cabin. Free 15-minute infusion sessions take up to 60 people; turn up in the sauna courtyard 5 minutes before the start. Food comes from a self-service restaurant upstairs, an indoor pub and a cocktail bar by the outdoor pool. Payment inside is cashless, by card or room charge on your wristband.

Getting there

Sóstógyógyfürdő sits in woodland between Nyíregyháza and the lake. The bath’s address is Fürdőház tér 2, 4431 Nyíregyháza, beside the old Hotel Fürdőház.

  • By car: Nyíregyháza is roughly 210 km (130 miles) north-east of Budapest as the crow flies, reached on the M3 motorway. From the city follow signs for Sóstó or Sóstógyógyfürdő; the bath is about 6 km (4 miles) north of the centre.
  • By bus: Line 8 runs from Nyíregyháza railway station to Sóstó. Get off at Krúdy Vigadó or ride to the Sóstógyógyfürdő terminus.

The operator says the building is wheelchair accessible, with a lift into the pool and accessible toilets.

When to go

Aquarius opens every day of the year from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The adventure world opens at 10 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. at weekends. Weekends, holidays and Hungarian school breaks are the busiest times, and weekend prices apply on holidays too.

Winter is when the thermal side makes most sense. In summer the neighbouring Parkfürdő (with a 50 m competition pool and a slide park) and the Tófürdő lake bath open as well, usually from late May or early June depending on the weather, and the whole Sóstó area fills with day-trippers.

Plan around the maintenance closure: the Termálvilág is shut from November 2 to 10, 2026 and reopens on November 11. The rest of the bath stays open, and the medical pool and saunas are free to ticket holders during that week.

Prices and booking

Prices below are from the operator’s 2026 list (checked October 2026). Weekend prices apply on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Residents of Nyíregyháza pay about a third less. Holders of Hungarian disability cards get 60% off for themselves and one companion. Tickets are sold at the desk and through the online shop linked from the website. Medical treatments in the balneotherapy department need an appointment (+36 42 475-031).

Bathing culture

Hungarian thermal baths have their own habits. Shower before you get in. Bring flip-flops, a towel and a robe, since the price list shows no towel hire. In the thermal pools people sit and talk rather than swim, and staff discourage splashing. A swim cap is a good idea in any lap pool in Hungary. Sauna sessions are run by a sauna master; stay for the whole infusion or leave between rounds, not in the middle.

Where to stay nearby

The Hotel Fürdőház shares the square with Aquarius; the tourism office says bathing has taken place on this spot since the 18th century. Sóstó has more hotels and guesthouses within walking distance, and central Nyíregyháza, a short bus ride away, has the widest choice. Sóstó Zoo and the Sóstó open-air museum village are both in the same resort area, so a two-day stay works well with children.

For a different kind of soak in the region, compare the water park at Hungarospa in Hajdúszoboszló or the Tiszaújváros thermal and beach bath.

Safety notes

  • Hot pools: 104°F40°C is hot. Keep soaks short, drink water and get out if you feel light-headed. Pregnant visitors and people with heart conditions should check with a doctor first.
  • Slides: age and height limits are enforced, and only one rider goes at a time.
  • Children: under-3s must be with an adult on the small slides. Keep an eye on young children in the wave pool.
  • Floors: wet tiles are slippery; wear flip-flops between zones.
