  • The operator lists a sulphide content of 173 mg/l, which it calls the highest in Italy.
  • Water rises at about 117°F47°C in the valley of the Torrente Bagni, about 1 km from the sea.
  • The baths closed in 2021 in a concession dispute; Terme Sibarite has run them under a lease since July 2022.

What to expect

The Terme Luigiane are a spa village in the province of Cosenza, on Calabria’s Tyrrhenian coast, straddling the boundary between the comuni of Acquappesa and Guardia Piemontese. The springs rise in the valley of the Torrente Bagni about 1 km from the sea, under a dolomite outcrop known locally as the Dito del Diavolo (the Devil’s Finger). The water comes out at about 117°F47°C and smells strongly of sulphur.

This is primarily a medical spa. Most visitors come for a course of cures, many paid for by the national health service (SSN), and the village has grown up around that trade with hotels, residences and a pizzeria. For a casual visitor the useful part is the Parco Termale Acquaviva, an outdoor thermal park you can enter with a day ticket.

The main complex combines the Thermae Novae establishment, the Acquaviva park with a wellness centre, and the Grand Hotel delle Terme, linked to the baths by an internal passage. A second, older establishment, San Francesco, stands a little further up the valley near the springs.

The pools

The operator describes the Acquaviva park as a garden of trees and flowers with no roads or buildings in view, only wooded hills. It has:

  • Three thermal pools fed by flowing spring water, with hydromassage jets, a counter-current swimming lane and turbo showers.
  • Humage (inhaling the vapour given off by the sulphur water) and a dispenser of hot thermal mud.
  • A freshwater pool and a separate children’s pool.
  • Birba Club, a play area for small children with its own freshwater pool.
  • A gym, with aqua-gym and group dance classes run by the entertainment team.

The operator says the pool water is used just as it comes from the springs, but it does not publish pool temperatures. Expect warm rather than hot water, and test each pool.

The water

The operator classifies the water as hyperthermal, sulphurous and salt-bromine-iodine, rated “1° Super” by the Ministry of Health. It gives a sulphide content of 173 mg/l and calls that the highest in Italy. The old Roman writer Pliny the Elder praised the springs, and the first documented therapeutic use dates to a 1446 letter attributed to San Francesco di Paola, according to a Il Foglio profile of the spa.

Getting there

The baths are just inland from the SS18 coast road, between Paola and Cetraro.

  • From the north (A2 motorway): leave at Tarsia Nord - Spezzano Terme and follow the fast road for about 42 km toward San Marco Argentano and the coast.
  • From the south: leave the A2 at Falerna and follow the SS18 Tirrenica north for about 58 km via Amantea and Paola, or leave at Cosenza Nord and take the fast road to Paola (about 42 km), then head north.
  • From Paola: about 16 km (10 miles), roughly 20 minutes.
  • From Cosenza: about 50 km (31 miles), roughly 50 minutes.

By train: Paola station, on the Naples to Reggio Calabria line, is 16 km away; Guardia Piemontese station is 2 km away. By air: Lamezia Terme airport is about 74 km south. The operator offers paid transfers on request (+39 0982 94052).

When to go

The complex runs on a season, and the operator does not post exact 2026 dates. Summer is the safe bet, and August is the busiest and most expensive month for park tickets. June and September are quieter and still warm. If you plan a visit in spring or autumn, ring first.

History of the closure

The baths have had a rough few years. The water concession belongs to the comuni of Guardia Piemontese and Acquappesa, and for decades the spa was run by S.A.TE.CA., a company with hundreds of local shareholders. After the old concession expired, the two sides fell out. In 2021 the comuni cut off the sulphur water and the baths and hotels shut, leaving about 250 people out of work, according to a local report from August 2021.

In July 2022 S.A.TE.CA. leased the business branch that includes the Thermae Novae establishment and the Acquaviva thermal park to Terme Sibarite S.p.A., a company based in Cassano allo Ionio on the Ionian side of the region. A Regione Calabria decree of December 2024 transferred the related water-discharge permits to the new operator. The concession question has a long history in the courts and regional offices, so check current status before planning a long stay.

Where to stay nearby

The Grand Hotel delle Terme connects directly to the baths. The village also has smaller hotels and guesthouses, among them the Hotel Moderno, the Nuovo Hotel Santa Lucia, Hotel La Sorgente and a B&B; check which are open in your dates. Paola, 16 km south, and the beach towns along the coast have many more rooms.

Safety notes

  • Sulphur: the smell is strong and can tarnish silver. Take off jewellery.
  • Soak time: keep sessions in the thermal pools short and drink water, especially in summer heat.
  • Medical cures: cures are given under medical supervision; tell the doctors about any heart condition, pregnancy or medication.
  • Children: the park has separate freshwater pools for children; keep small children out of the hottest water.

Nearby stops worth adding

Hilltop Guardia Piemontese, just above the baths, was settled by Waldensians from Piedmont and has a Waldensian museum. In Paola, the Santuario di San Francesco di Paola draws pilgrims all year. For another Calabrian spa, Terme di Cerchiara is about 70 km (45 miles) north-east by road.
