What to expect

The Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center is a municipal pool first and a hot spring second. It is a large indoor hall on Rainbow Boulevard, with a lap pool, a shallower hot pool and a handful of private soaking rooms, all filled with geothermal water piped in from springs near Poncha Springs. It is run by the City of Salida Parks and Recreation Department, and on a weekday you share it with lap swimmers, swim lessons and locals on their lunch break.

The building has real history. It was built in 1937 as a Works Progress Administration project during the Great Depression, giving work to about 200 men who dug the pipeline and built the pool almost entirely by hand. A year later, in 1938, the city bought the rights to the spring water at Poncha Springs for $40,000. The facility has been renovated many times since, and the operators and regional tourism groups bill it as the largest indoor hot springs facility in the United States, a claim we have not seen independently checked.

The water comes from about 40 springs on a 185-acre city-owned site near Poncha Springs, producing around 145 gallons per minute. It flows downhill by gravity to Salida. It arrives clear and odorless, without the sulfur smell of many hot springs. Sources disagree on how far it travels: city pages have said 4.5 miles and 8 miles, a regional guide says about six.

The pools

  • Lap pool: six lanes, kept at about 84-86°F29-30°C. It is the widest and longest pool in the area and is also used for diving and kayak practice.
  • Leisure pool: the soaking pool, kept around 98-100°F37-38°C, about 4 feet deep at most, with a zero-depth entry that works for small children.
  • Private soaking pools: European-style tubs in private rooms, rented by the hour for up to about three people. Each is drained and refilled after every use, and you choose the temperature. A 2018 report said private pool users must be 18 or older.

If you are after a long, hot soak, the leisure pool at around 100°F38°C is pleasant but not very hot. The private tubs are the way to get the water hotter.

Getting there

The aquatic center is at 410 West Rainbow Boulevard, which is US Highway 50 as it passes through Salida. It sits on the main highway near the center of town, a few blocks from the historic downtown.

  • From Denver: Take US 285 southwest through South Park and over Trout Creek Pass to Poncha Springs, then go east on US 50 into Salida.
  • From Colorado Springs or Cañon City: Follow US 50 west up the Arkansas River canyon to Salida.
  • From Gunnison: Come east over Monarch Pass on US 50, through Poncha Springs.

It is a short walk or bike ride from downtown hotels.

When to go

The pool is open year-round, which makes it a common stop for skiers coming back from Monarch Mountain, west of Poncha Springs. Hours change by season. In August 2026 the published schedule was Monday 6am to 1pm, Tuesday to Friday 6am to 8pm, Saturday 10:30am to 8pm and Sunday noon to 6pm. Pools clear 15 minutes before closing.

Plan around closures. The city shuts the pools for maintenance from time to time: they closed for required work in spring 2025 and reopened May 22, and in July 2026 the city extended a temporary closure to drain and refill both pools, with a tentative reopening on July 24. The city calendar also listed a maintenance closure from October 5 to 18, 2026, and said those dates were subject to change. Check the calendar before you drive in.

Weekday afternoons are usually calmer than weekends. Summer evenings and holiday weeks fill with families.

Prices and booking

General admission is a daily drop-in fee charged by age group, with memberships and punch passes for regulars. The city has run occasional discounts, such as money off for Monarch season pass holders. We could not confirm the current 2026 rates from the city’s own pages, so check the daily admission and memberships page on the City of Salida website before you go.

Private soaking pools are booked separately, for an hourly fee, through the city’s online recreation store or at the front desk. Book ahead on winter weekends and holidays.

Rules and etiquette

  • Swimsuits are required. This is a public pool, not a clothing-optional spring.
  • No alcohol, smoking or glass anywhere around the pools.
  • Shower before you swim, as at any public pool.
  • Supervise children. Keep young kids within reach, especially around the deeper lap pool.
  • Respect lane use. Lap swim lanes are for swimmers, not for floating.

Where to stay nearby

There is no lodging at the pool, but downtown Salida has motels, inns and vacation rentals within walking or cycling distance, along with restaurants and breweries along the Arkansas River. Poncha Springs, a few miles west, and Buena Vista, north up the valley on US 285, are other bases. National forest and Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area campgrounds line the valley for summer visitors.

Safety notes

  • Altitude: Salida sits at about 7,000 feet. Hot water raises your heart rate, so drink water and take breaks.
  • Soak time: Even at 100°F38°C, long sessions in the hot pool can leave you lightheaded. Get out and cool down if you feel dizzy.
  • Wet floors: Pool decks are slippery. Walk, especially with children.
  • Winter driving: If you come from Monarch, US 50 over the pass can be icy. Check conditions before driving.

Nearby stops worth adding

The Upper Arkansas Valley has the densest cluster of hot springs in Colorado. Up the valley near Nathrop, Antero Hot Springs Cabins offers private soaks for overnight guests. Over Poncha Pass in the San Luis Valley, Valley View Hot Springs is a clothing-optional set of natural pools on a mountainside. Pair either with a soak in town.
