  • Not a hot spring: the pools hold Rangitata River water heated mainly by about 500 solar thermal collectors, with heat pumps as backup.
  • Three areas: Discovery for all ages (97-99°F36-37°C), adults-only Tranquility with a swim-up bar (100°F38°C), and Serenity private tubs up to 106°F41°C.
  • Chlorine is made on site from salt and the water has no sulphur, so you can put your head under.
  • Mt Hutt ski area is the obvious pairing; the pools sit on the edge of Methven, about an hour from Christchurch.

What to expect

Ōpuke is a purpose-built pool and spa complex on the edge of Methven, the farming and ski town below Mt Hutt in Mid Canterbury. It opened at the end of 2021, after construction that began in June 2020, and was partly funded by a NZ$6.5 million Provincial Growth Fund loan to its operator, Methven Adventures Limited.

It is not a hot spring. The word “thermal” in the name refers to heated water, not geothermal water. Ōpuke draws water from the Rangitata River, which carries glacial melt from the Southern Alps, and heats it mostly with about 500 solar thermal collectors that take up a quarter of the site. Spare solar heat goes into buffer tanks, and heat pumps make up the shortfall on cloudy days. The operator markets this as a zero-emission system. The water is chlorinated, using chlorine made on site from salt, and it has no minerals and no sulphur smell. You can put your head under, which you should not do in a geothermal pool.

So think of it as a well-designed hot pool complex with a mountain view, not a natural spring. For geothermal water in Canterbury, head north to Hanmer Springs.

The pools

Ōpuke splits into three bathing areas, plus a day spa:

  • Discovery: the family area, for all ages, at about 97-99°F36-37°C. It has a lazy river ride, an aqua play zone with water cannons, a plunge pool, an observation pool and star-lit caves. Changing rooms here are non-gendered, and the Discovery Café is next door.
  • Tranquility: adults only (18+), at about 100°F38°C. It has a swim-up bar and eatery, with food served at the bar or in floating baskets. The deepest point is 1.5 m (5 ft), so you need to be able to swim in the deeper parts. Entry includes the Discovery pools when they are in session.
  • Serenity: adults only. You get a private hot tub for 2 to 4 people, up to 106°F41°C, for a 2-hour session, with food and drink ordered from the tub. There are five tubs. The sauna, cold plunge and outdoor showers are shared, and a bread platter is included. Entry also covers Tranquility and Discovery.

The day spa offers massages, facials, a rasul steam room and float treatments, for ages 18 and over.

Getting there

The address is 35 Mount Hutt Station Road, Methven, about an hour’s drive from Christchurch. Methven is the base town for Mt Hutt ski area, so in winter the road up the mountain and the pools share the same crowd. There is parking on site and the entrance is a few steps from the car. EV chargers are listed among the facilities.

When to go

Ōpuke is open all year except Christmas Day. In 2026 booking listings, the Discovery pools ran 10am to 8pm daily, and Tranquility and the restaurant ran 10am to 8pm Sunday to Thursday and to 10pm on Friday and Saturday. The operator runs separate summer and winter timetables (Saturday nights stay open to 10pm in both), so check the hours for your date.

Winter evenings after a ski day are the busiest. Summer school holidays fill the Discovery pools with families. A weekday morning outside the holidays is the quietest time.

Prices and booking

Sessions are sold as standard 2-hour or 4-hour bookings, which include check-in and changing time. Tranquility and Serenity sessions are 2 hours. Late arrival cuts into your soak.

Discovery 2-hour entry, from 2026 booking listings:

  • Adults: NZ$34
  • Children 3-15: NZ$23
  • Family (2 adults and 2 children): NZ$94
  • Under 3: free
  • Towel hire: NZ$6.50

Tranquility and Serenity are priced separately on the operator’s booking page and include robes, towels and lockers. Free lockers are available to all guests. Swimsuits are sold but not hired. The site is cashless (card or Paywave only), and no public holiday surcharge applied in 2026.

Booking online is strongly recommended because sessions have limited capacity. Walk-ins are accepted only when a session has space, and there is no waitlist; cancelled tickets go straight back on the website. Memberships run from 1 June to 31 May.

Rules and etiquette

  • Swimwear is required for your whole visit.
  • Adults-only areas: Tranquility, Serenity and the day spa are 18+. Bring an NZ driver’s licence, passport or Kiwi Access Card if you look under 25.
  • Alcohol: in Tranquility and Serenity you can buy up to two alcoholic drinks per 2-hour session under the liquor licence. Anyone who wants more has to sit outside the pool area and cannot go back in.
  • Child supervision: under 5s within arm’s reach of a caregiver aged 16+, with no more than two under-5s per caregiver; ages 5-7 actively supervised by a caregiver in the water; ages 8-13 with a caregiver on site. Children aged 14 and over may come alone.

Where to stay nearby

There is no accommodation at Ōpuke. Methven has motels, lodges, backpacker hostels and holiday homes, many of them set up for skiers, and most are a short drive from the pools. Ashburton, on State Highway 1 to the southeast, is the nearest larger town, and Christchurch is about an hour away for a day trip.

Safety notes

  • Heat: 106°F41°C in the Serenity tubs is hot. Keep soaks short, drink water and take a break if you feel light-headed. Pregnant guests should check with their healthcare provider and limit time in the hottest pools.
  • Deep water: Tranquility reaches 1.5 m (5 ft). Weak swimmers should stay in the shallow areas.
  • Alcohol and hot water do not mix well, which is one reason for the two-drink limit.
  • Accessibility: there is an accessible changing room with a shower and toilet, and one Discovery pool and one Tranquility pool have aqua wheelchair access.
