  • Source water comes out at 124-208°F51-98°C and is cooled before it reaches the pools.
  • This is the busiest thermal hotel area around Afyonkarahisar, the province that markets itself as Turkey's thermal capital.
  • Hotels such as Oruçoğlu run mixed pools, women-only indoor pools and private family baths.
  • The water carries a lot of carbon dioxide, and it was long used for drinking and breathing cures as well as bathing.

What to expect

Ömer and Gecek are two neighbouring hot spring areas on the road from Afyonkarahisar to Kütahya, about 15 km (9 miles) north-west of Afyon city. They are almost always named together as Ömer-Gecek, and in practice they work as one thermal strip: a line of large spa hotels along the main road, each drawing hot water from the springs and wells around it. An October 2026 report called this the area with the highest density of thermal hotels in Afyon, a province that sells itself as Turkey’s thermal capital.

There is no public open-air spring to walk up to. You come here to stay in a thermal hotel and use its pools, hamam and private baths, usually for a few nights.

The water is very hot at source. Reports give 124-208°F51-98°C, and the hotels cool it before it goes into the pools. It is a mineral-heavy water: an older Hürriyet guide lists chloride, bicarbonate, sodium, iron and arsenic, along with a lot of carbon dioxide. That guide says the cooled water was used for drinking cures and that the gas made it useful for breathing cures too. Oruçoğlu Thermal Resort publishes a 2010 analysis of its own well, with a source temperature of 169°F76°C and total mineralisation of about 4,700 mg per litre, mostly sodium, chloride and bicarbonate. The hotels make broad health claims for the water; treat those as marketing.

The pools

Each hotel runs its own set of pools, so the experience depends on where you stay. Oruçoğlu Thermal Resort, at kilometre 14 on the Kütahya road, is the best-known example. It is a five-star hotel of about 300 rooms on a 110,000 m² site, and it lists:

  • An indoor thermal pool kept at 91-93°F33-34°C.
  • Women-only indoor thermal pools.
  • A men’s thermal pool and a mixed indoor-outdoor pool, according to the October 2026 report.
  • Private family baths at 100-106°F38-41°C, open 08:00 to 20:00. Book these ahead.
  • A thermal hamam, with kese scrubs and foam massage.

Thermal water is also piped to the rooms. Other hotels on the strip, such as ATSO Gecek Termal near Gecek station, run their own pools; ask each one for its timetable and its rules on swim caps and swimwear.

Getting there

Ömer-Gecek is on the Afyonkarahisar-Kütahya road, roughly 14-15 km (9 miles) from Afyon city centre. Drive out of the city towards Kütahya and the hotels start appearing beside the road; most have their own car parks. Oruçoğlu’s address is Dörtyol Mahallesi, Ömer Caddesi No:1-1A.

Without a car, get to Afyonkarahisar by intercity bus and take a taxi for the last stretch, or ask your hotel whether it arranges transfers. Gecek also has a station on the railway line that runs beside the road.

When to go

The hotels are open all year, but the thermal season here is winter. An October 2026 report put the season from November to March, when cold weather makes a hot pool the main event. Expect the hotels to fill at weekends, over New Year, during the mid-year school break and on the bayram holidays. Weekdays in winter give you the atmosphere without the crowds.

Summer is the quieter season for thermal stays, which can mean better room rates; ask the hotels.

Prices and booking

Bathing at Ömer-Gecek is sold with a room. Rates vary by hotel, season and board basis. Oruçoğlu takes bookings by phone on 0272 251 50 50 and through its website. It does not publish a day-use price for non-guests, and other hotels on the strip set their own policies, so ask before you drive out for a day soak. Private family baths at Oruçoğlu are booked separately, and spa treatments cost extra. Turkish prices change often, so confirm the total before you pay.

Bathing culture

The hotels follow Turkish thermal bath customs, with a modern layer on top.

  • Separate and mixed pools. Hotels like Oruçoğlu run women-only indoor pools alongside men’s and mixed pools, so families with children swim together in the mixed pool while anyone who wants single-sex bathing has that option.
  • Family baths. Couples and families who want privacy book an aile banyosu, a private room with its own thermal tub.
  • The hamam. In a hamam, men wrap a peştamal (thin cotton cloth) around the waist and keep it on; women usually wear a swimsuit bottom or a wrap. A kese is a scrub with a rough mitt, often followed by a foam wash.
  • Shower first. Rinse before getting into any shared pool and keep soap out of the water.

Where to stay nearby

The hotels on the Ömer-Gecek strip are the place to stay, since the pools come with the room. For a different feel, Gazlıgöl, about 21 km north of Afyon, is a small town of family-run thermal hotels with private pools. Afyonkarahisar city has ordinary hotels at every price, 15 minutes away.

Safety notes

  • Source temperatures: the raw water is close to boiling. Never touch outflow pipes, channels or taps marked as thermal water.
  • Drinking: the water contains arsenic and other minerals. Drink only from fountains the hotel labels as drinking water.
  • Time in the water: keep soaks in the hotter family baths short (15 to 20 minutes at a time), drink water, and get out if you feel dizzy.
  • Health: anyone with a heart condition, blood pressure problems or a pregnancy should ask a doctor before using hot pools and the hamam.
  • Winter driving: check the forecast for snow and ice in winter and allow extra time on the road.

Nearby stops worth adding

In Afyonkarahisar, climb to the castle on its volcanic rock above the old town for the view. North of the city, the thermal hotels of Gazlıgöl and the Phrygian rock monuments in the hills beyond make a good half-day drive.
