What to expect
Golden Haven is a small, family-owned spa and motel on Lake Street in Calistoga, a short walk from the shops and restaurants on Lincoln Avenue. It is not one of the big Napa Valley resorts. The rooms are motel-style, the grounds are compact, and the business is built around one thing: the Calistoga mud bath, done in private rooms where couples or friends go through it together.
Mineral water from a geothermal aquifer under the property feeds the pool, the hot tubs and the baths. It smells of sulphur, and the minerals tint the water and tiles slightly. That is normal for Calistoga springs.
The pools
Guests share one pool area, gated and partly covered, which gives it a semi-indoor feel. Steam rises off it on cool days.
- Main mineral pool: 85-88°F29-31°C. Warm enough for a long, slow soak and some easy swimming.
- Two adjoining hot tubs: one at 98-100°F37-38°C, the other at 102-104°F39-40°C.
The pool area also has a bocce court, a picnic area and a few small lockers, which are first come, first served. There are no full locker rooms. You change in your treatment room or your hotel room.
The Mineral Soak Room, one of the hotel rooms, has its own hot springs soaking tub for two, so you can soak in private without using the shared pool.
The mud bath
The mud bath is what most people come for. In Golden Haven’s version, you and your partner or friends (two, three or four people) share one private treatment room. The whole thing takes about an hour:
- You sink into a tub of hot mud.
- You get a clay face mask and a cool compress.
- You rinse and move into a hot mineral water bath, with a glass of cool water.
- You cool down wrapped in a light flannel sheet, with aromatherapy and a salt lamp.
You undress in the room, and mud baths are traditionally done nude. Swimsuits are allowed but may stain, and disposable bottoms are provided. You share a shower area with whoever is in the room with you. Staff cannot help you in or out of the tub, so if you have limited mobility, bring someone who can. If stairs are a problem, say so when you book and they will keep you on the ground floor.
An Herbal Mineral Bath is offered in place of the mud for people who prefer to skip it.

Getting there
Calistoga sits at the north end of Napa Valley where Highway 29 and Highway 128 meet.
- From Napa: Drive north on Highway 29 through Yountville and St. Helena to Calistoga, where 29 becomes Lincoln Avenue. Golden Haven is at 1713 Lake Street, a few blocks north of the downtown strip.
- From Santa Rosa: Take Calistoga Road or Petrified Forest Road east over the hills into town.
- From San Francisco: Allow around two hours without traffic, via US 101 and Highway 37 to Highway 29, or via Santa Rosa.
Parking is on site. Most rooms have parking outside the door, and Standard rooms get a reserved space.
When to go
Golden Haven is open year-round.
- Monday to Thursday is the cheapest time for mud baths, and the only time the Hydro Massage and pool package is sold.
- November to April suits a hot soak best. Napa summers are hot, and wine-country weekends get busy from late summer through harvest.
- Avoid October 26-30, 2026 if you want the pool. It closes that week for its yearly cleaning and maintenance.
Where to stay nearby
Staying on site is the simplest choice, since room guests get the pool for free. Golden Haven has 28 rooms, including two-bedroom units that sleep four.
Calistoga has several other hot springs resorts within walking distance, among them Calistoga Spa Hot Springs on Washington Street, which the Visit Calistoga guide names as offering day-use pool access. St. Helena, about 15 minutes south on Highway 29, has more hotels and restaurants.
Safety notes
- Heat and health. Golden Haven itself says the mud bath is a heat treatment and is not recommended during pregnancy or for people with high or low blood pressure, diabetes or those undergoing chemotherapy. Ask your doctor if you are unsure.
- Hydration. Eat beforehand and drink water. Do not combine a mud bath with wine tasting earlier in the day.
- The hottest tub runs up to 104°F40°C. Keep soaks short and get out if you feel lightheaded.
- Footing. Pool decks and tub steps are slippery. Move slowly when you climb out of the mud.
