What to expect
Chignahuapan is a Pueblo Mágico in the Sierra Norte of Puebla, a cold, often foggy highland town best known for its glass Christmas baubles. Its thermal balneario, the Hotel y Balneario Aguas Termales Chignahuapan, sits on the edge of town in the Tenextla area and has been operating for about 90 years. It is a full hotel and day-use complex rather than a natural spring: the thermal water feeds built pools, a spa and the bathtubs in the rooms.
There are seven pools, some indoor and some outdoor, and the water runs at about 99 to 104°F37 to 40°C, according to ADN40’s October 2026 guide. That is the comfortable end of hot. With a cold wind outside, you can stay in for a long time. Infobae, citing a UNAM study, lists magnesium, sodium, potassium, lithium, bicarbonate, sulfate, calcium and iron among the minerals in the water.
The complex has several zones:
- General pools, including the Alberca Pirata and a covered pool (Alberca Techada), on the basic ticket.
- VIP area: two pools with water jets, a jacuzzi and two steam rooms (one using natural thermal steam, one boiler-heated), with private lockers and changing rooms. Food and drink here cost extra.
- Alberca Familiar: a private pool rented by the hour.
- Spa: treatment rooms, a meditation room, a fish-pedicure room and a bath with a tub and panoramic jacuzzi.
- Restaurant with a buffet and à la carte menu, a bar with live music at weekends, and four event halls.
Infobae’s 2024 write-up also mentioned an easy-access pool for older visitors and people with disabilities, a lift, a thermal cave and a temazcal. Ask whether those are still running when you book.
Getting there
From Mexico City: Chignahuapan is about 195 km (121 miles) away. Google Maps routes you along the México-Tuxpan highway (132D) towards the Sierra Norte, which ADN40 put at roughly 2.5 hours in light traffic and close to 4 hours on a busy day.
From Puebla city: the town sits in the north of the state, a drive of a couple of hours through the highlands.
In town: the balneario is outside the centre. Infobae put it about 25 minutes’ drive from the main square, on the road towards Baños Libertad.
Fog is common in the Sierra Norte, especially in the evening and in winter. Plan to arrive and leave in daylight.
When to go
The balneario is open every day of the year. The cold months, roughly November to February, are when the warm pools make the most sense. The run-up to Christmas, when the town’s bauble makers are busiest, also brings busier weekends.
Weekdays are quieter and cheaper: weekend and high-season prices add MX$10 for adults and MX$15 for children and seniors. Mexican school holidays and long weekends are the busiest times.
Prices and booking
Prices below are from ADN40’s October 2026 guide, which drew on the operator’s published list. They are per person, in Mexican pesos.
| Area | Adult | Child | INAPAM |
|---|---|---|---|
| General entry | MX$150 | MX$120 | MX$120 |
| General entry + buffet | MX$320 | MX$270 | MX$290 |
| VIP pools | MX$290 | MX$220 | MX$260 |
| VIP pools + buffet | MX$498 | MX$390 | MX$475 |
- Weekends and high season: adults MX$10 more, children and INAPAM MX$15 more.
- Alberca Familiar: MX$580 per hour for 1 to 4 people, then MX$150 per extra adult and MX$120 per extra child or senior.
- Hotel: 64 rooms and suites, each with a thermal-water tub; the Master Suite has a thermal jacuzzi. Guests get a private pool and jacuzzi, a games room and Wi-Fi. Room prices were not in the 2026 guide, so ask the hotel directly. In 2024 Infobae reported packages that included pool entry, meals and parking.
Contact: 797 971 0313 or ventas@termaleschignahuapan.mx. Day visitors do not need to book. Book rooms and the family pool ahead, especially for winter weekends.
Rules and etiquette
- Swimsuits in all pools. Bring a towel and sandals.
- Shower before you get in. It keeps the pools cleaner for everyone.
- Children must be supervised. Child prices apply to younger visitors; ask how the operator measures them (height or age) at the ticket office.
- VIP and family areas are separate tickets. Do not drift between zones on a general ticket.
- Food: the buffet packages and restaurant are the main options inside.
Where to stay nearby
The hotel at the balneario is the obvious choice if you want to soak in your own room after the pools close. Otherwise, Chignahuapan’s centre has plenty of small hotels and guesthouses around the main square, with its kiosk and the basilica a short walk away.
Within a short drive are the town’s other draws: the Laguna de Chignahuapan, the Christmas bauble workshops and the forested hills around town. Zacatlán, another Pueblo Mágico known for apples and cider, is nearby and makes an easy second base.
Safety notes
- Heat: 104°F40°C water is fine for most people in moderation. Take breaks, drink water and get out if you feel lightheaded, particularly after a buffet or a drink.
- Steam rooms: keep sessions short, and skip them if you have heart problems or are pregnant.
- Wet floors: tiled pool decks get slippery. Walk, do not run, and keep an eye on children.
- Cold and fog: the highlands get properly cold at night, and fog can cut visibility on mountain roads. Bring warm layers and avoid driving late.
- Travel advice: Canada’s travel advisory (updated October 19, 2026) asks visitors to exercise a high degree of caution across Mexico; Puebla is not on its list of areas to avoid. It advises against driving after dark and recommends toll highways where possible.
